About The Wine

Chateau Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and most esteemed wine estates in the Bordeaux region, this Blanc embodies centuries of tradition and excellence.

Nestled atop a majestic gravel hill, Chateau Carbonnieux boasts a rich history spanning nearly eight centuries. Since its inception, it has been a beacon of quality, belonging to the iconic Perrin Family for four generations. The vineyard, enveloping the castle, is a testament to sustainable and eco-responsible agriculture, exclusively dedicated to producing Grands Crus Classés de Graves.

The history of Chateau Carbonnieux intertwines seamlessly with that of Bordeaux itself. From its medieval origins to its zenith during the reign of Louis XIV, each chapter is marked by resilience and refinement. Thomas Jefferson himself, a connoisseur of both wine and history, left his indelible mark on the estate during his grand tour of France in 1786.

In the aftermath of two World Wars, Chateau Carbonnieux faced adversity head-on. However, in 1956, under the stewardship of Marc Perrin, the estate embarked on a journey of revitalization. Through meticulous replanting and modernization efforts, the Perrin family ushered in a new era of excellence, elevating Bordeaux wines to new heights of renown. Today, this estate is better than ever.

65% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillón. A pale yellow color, very pure with slightly green tints. The nose is young, revealing freshness and the whole personality of the white Sauvignon in its savory aromas of intense citrus fruit. The freshness and intensity is surprising in this 2020 white. The woodiness is mellowed leaving pride of place to the aromas of juicy white fruit (pear, peach...). The end is divine.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The grapefruit and honey aromas of this wine are echoed in its crisp and rounded textures. It is ripe with apple and spice flavors, the wood aging subtly in the background. Drink from 2027. ~96 Wine Enthusiast

Gunsmoke, stone fruits, elderflower, cold ash, oyster shell, spice. As it opens through the palate, creamy stone fruits add depth, grip and lift. Great quality, precise and with huge persistency. Excellent quality from this always consistent estate. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Very bright and mineral with lively citrus-fruit, ginger, white-flower and crushed-stone character. A hint of seashell, too. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and focused with tense acidity and a firm, lightly phenolic finish. ~93-94 James Suckling

With its lemon rind and grassy notes, this Sauvignon Blanc dominated wine - ever reliable - continues to appeal in 2023, although it does have some varietal aspects that come across as less nuanced when compared to some of its peers. Nonetheless, this is excellent white wine, with grip, juiciness, depth and freshness. To be served confidently with fish in a cream sauce. ~93 Decanter

Granny Smith apples, flowers, lemon rind, honeysuckle, white peach, and pineapple is there with just a swirl or two in the perfume. Vibrant, fresh, and fruity with sweetness, spice, roundness, finishing with pineapples, white peach, and lemon curd, with the touch of crushed sones in the backend. The wine blends 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon. ~93 The Wine Cellar Insider

Precise and of great sensorial class, it shows notes of hawthorn, lemons, bergamot, acacia and magnolias. Full body, savory and slender, with a harmonious and direct finish. Better from 2025. ~93 WinesCritic.com

A blend of 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Sémillon, the 2023 Carbonnieux Blanc exhibits elegant aromas of pear, white peach, spring flowers and herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, satiny and long texture enhanced by bright acids and a lively mid-palate. It concludes with a long, delicate, mouthwateringly mordant finish, making it a classic white wine from this estate. ~90-92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc is light gold-hued and offer terrific aromatics of ripe citrus, minty herbs, and a kiss of grapefruit. These carry to a medium-bodied white with a round, supple texture, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. ~90-92 Jeb Dunnuck
