About The Wine

Sociando-Mallet was never classified in 1855. The vineyard had not been planted when the list was drawn up. That has never stopped Bordeaux insiders from buying it.

It sits in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of Saint-Estephe, right on the banks of the Gironde. The gravel here is the same terrace that runs under Montrose, Leoville-Las Cases and Latour. The river keeps it a few degrees cooler than Margaux to the south.

Jean Gautreau bought the estate in 1969 because the soil fascinated him. His family still owns it. The vines are planted dense, 8,333 to the hectare.

In 2023 the team picked the Merlot early to keep the fruit bright, then waited on the Cabernet. Harvest ran from September 11 to October 4. The blend is 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.

In the glass it is cassis and cherry, pencil shavings and cedar, with a citrus edge that keeps it fresh. It is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, crisp finish.

I'd pour this blind next to classified growths and let the table argue. Give it an hour in a decanter first.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Black currants, iron and a hint of spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with juicy tannins, blackberry flavors and undertones of spices, cedar and graphite. A blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two. ~ 94 James Suckling

Dark fruit, violet notes, black cherries and touches of liquorice. Supple and lively, really tangy and zesty, bright but not over the top with such a creamy, chalky texture giving a soft grip. Generous but controlled, I like the style, there’s concentration but keeps such a cool blue fruit edge which gives freshness and the minerality doesn't stick out at all. Expressive and elegant, but with body and something to get your teeth stuck into. Lovely suppleness but finally ends grippy and stony with the salinity lingering on the very long finish with mint, liquorice and clove. Characterful. I like this a lot. A stand out wine and top buy! 60% grand vin production. 8% press wine. 3.55pH. Ageing 12-14 months, 80% new oak. ~ 94 Decanter

The 2023 Sociando-Mallet is showing well, exhibiting aromas of cherries and cassis mingled with hints of pencil shavings and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's lively and classically structured, with sweet tannins, bright acids and a penetrating finish. The blend is 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, which attained 14% alcohol. ~ 90-92 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Sociando-Mallet

Château Sociando-Mallet is a renowned Haut-Médoc estate in Bordeaux, located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne overlooking the Gironde estuary, just north of Pauillac. Jean Gautreau acquired the property in 1969 when it had just five hectares of vines and transformed it into one of the Médoc’s most distinctive estates. Today, its 83 hectares of vineyards sit on exceptional Günz gravel over deep clay-limestone soils, a terroir that gives the wines their signature combination of structure, freshness, and elegance. The estate focuses on traditional, plot-by-plot winemaking, producing powerful, age-worthy reds led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
