About The Wine

Elizabeth Vianna was headed for medical school. One glass of Bordeaux sent her to Napa instead.

She was working as a clinical toxicologist in New York when she tasted a 1985 Sociando-Mallet at Christie's. Glass in hand, she heard Christian Moueix praise the enology program at UC Davis. Moueix ran Pétrus for 38 years. She applied to Davis instead of medical school.

She first worked Chimney Rock's vines as a harvest intern in 1999. The Terlato family made her head winemaker in 2005. She has since stopped herbicide use in the vineyards.

The estate sits on the Silverado Trail at the southern end of the Stags Leap District. Philip Togni made its first two vintages, 1984 and 1985. Part of the vineyard was a golf course until the Terlatos pulled the last nine holes and planted Cabernet.

Elevage is the estate's Bordeaux blend, which makes sense given the glass that started all this. The name is French for raising a wine in barrel. Every grape is estate-grown, from 28 blocks the winery was built to ferment separately.

Cabernet brings the frame. Merlot brings the flesh. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc add lift when the year calls for them. I buy Stags Leap for texture: power without the sandpaper.

Decant it an hour and put a ribeye next to it. When someone asks about the bottle, tell them the med-school story.

Blackcurrant and dark cherry up front, with graphite, cedar, savory herbs and a streak of loamy earth underneath. The palate is medium to full-bodied and generous: black cherry, plum, blackberry and red currant, framed by cocoa, bittersweet chocolate and warm baking spice from the oak. A leafy, savory edge keeps it fresh. Tannins are fine-grained and velvety, carrying into a long finish with a lift of mint. Ready now; critics give it until 2035–2040.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A rocking Bordeaux blend from this great vintage, the 2023 Red Blend Elevage offers pure blackcurrants, darker cherries, graphite, savory herbs, and loamy earth aromatics. It's medium to full-bodied with a pure, elegant mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish. Drink this incredibly classy, seamless effort over the coming 15 years or more. Drink 2025-2040.~95 Jeb Dunnuck

A keenly structured yet polished red, with handsome flavors of black cherry and red currant accented by tomato leaf and bittersweet chocolate as this gathers richness toward fine-grained tannins. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035. 3,619 cases made. ~94 Wine Spectator

This bold, ripe, full-bodied red also boasts some freshness, good balance and complexity. Ample oak spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and cocoa are layered over rich black cherries, dried blueberries and creme de cassis. Substantial, velvety tannins provide support and aging potential. Drink now or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Plum, pomegranate and blackberry fill a generous palate, joined by red cherry and blackcurrant. Allspice, graphite, dark chocolate and pine add depth, building to a long, mint-scented finish. ~94 Decanter

The 2023 Elevage is especially fine. Aromatic, silky and wonderfully inviting, the Elevage is such a sensual wine. Spice, red orange, mint, cedar, leather and a kiss of French oak give this juicy red tons of charm. ~93 Vinous Media
