About The Wine

If you've heard of Napa Cab or Bordeaux, imagine a wine that plays in the same league — but from a corner of South America where the grapes have been growing since before Prohibition.

Clos Apalta's Apalta Valley estate in Chile's Colchagua Valley has earned three perfect 100-point scores from James Suckling and had its flagship wine named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Prelude is its third wine— crafted with the same meticulous care as the flagship, using fruit from the same biodynamic, organically certified vineyard.

The 2023 vintage brought more rainfall than the drought-stricken 2022, with cool winters and warm, sunny growing season culminating in a harvest marked by exceptional depth and dense fruit expression. Careful canopy management and precise timing preserved the freshness and energy that define the Clos Apalta style.

At the heart of this wine is Carménère — Chile's signature grape, which disappeared from France after phylloxera but survived in the Apalta Valley on vines that trace their lineage back to French massal selections from the early 1900s.

The result is a red that feels familiar to fans of Merlot or Cabernet-dominant blends, but with its own spiced, layered personality. Aged 17 months in French oak with only 18% new wood, it's textured and generous without being overworked.

50% Carménère, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot.

Deep purple-red with dark, inky edges. The nose is expressive and inviting — fresh cherries, ripe blackberries, paprika, spice, and a savory hint of tapenade.

On the palate, the entry is juicy and almost full-bodied, with melted, dusty tannins that give way to a velvety mid-palate and a long, satisfying finish. Aged 17 months in French oak (10% new, 90% second and third use). Drink from 2026.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Lovely freshness from this warm year, with good depth and concentration. Fresh cherries, blackberries, paprika, spices and tapenade on the nose. Juicy and almost full-bodied on the palate, with melted, dusty tannins and a long finish. 50% carmenere, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot. About 16 months in barrels, of which 18% were new oak and the rest is second-use. Drink from 2026. ~ 95 James Suckling

The 2023 Prelude opens with a quintessentially Carménère-driven nose of ripe red fruits, dried herbs and spices against a lush backdrop of roasted coffee and black licorice aromas. The palate is seamless and polished, concluding with a similarly svelte finish framed with powdery tannins and a creamy undercurrent. This is a blend of 50% Carménère, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. ~ 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

So aromatic, dark black fruit, bramble berries - ripe and heady, deep and seductive. Damson plum, earthy scents, wet soil and a touch of gunsmoke. Intensely perfumed blackcurrants, liquorice and black chocolate. Svelte and streamlined with soft, well-integrated tannins and gorgeous fruit purity - keeps a streamlined structure. Poised, lovely delicacy, nothing overblown. There’s power but also restraint. Some granite and pencil lead minerality really adds the salinity and touch of metalicism as well as spice and toast accent the fruit but overall stay in the background. Ends on a toasted liquorice note. Great quality. ~ 91 Decanter
