About The Wine

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé has held its vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny since 1450 — twenty generations of one family, uninterrupted through the French Revolution and both World Wars. The estate is best known as the largest holder of Le Musigny, but its second Grand Cru, Bonnes-Mares, comes from a separate 2.7-hectare parcel at the vineyard's southern end, planted on iron-rich clay that gives the wine its weight and structure.

The 2023 is director Jean Lupatelli's read on that site: dense, "horizontal" in shape rather than tall and linear, built around black plum and mulberry with the earth, smoke, and leather that iron-rich clay tends to produce in Pinot Noir. It's not a wine that shows everything on day one. Give it seven to ten years before pulling the cork, and there's another two decades of drinking ahead of it after that.

Pinot Noir, 100%, from de Vogüé's 2.7-hectare Bonnes-Mares parcel on the vineyard's southern, iron-rich clay soils. Ripe black plum and mulberry lead, with earth, smoke, and leather underneath — a substantial, dense expression that director Jean Lupatelli describes as "horizontal" rather than vertical in structure. Built for the cellar: seven to ten years before opening, with a drinking window extending through the next three decades.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an understated but fragrant bouquet, with wilted iris and violet petals infusing the detailed black and blueberry fruit. The palate is so much better than the 2022—much more intense and complex, with fine tannins and insistent grip. An assiduous touch of white pepper lingers in the mouth. Very harmonious and assured, this is a great Bonnes-Mares from de Vogüé. This is destined to give 20 years of drinking pleasure. De Vogüé's Bonnes-Mares is back." ~97 Vinous Media

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares from de Vogüé is a lush, concentrated wine boasting ripe black plum and mulberry aromas with hints of earth, smoke, and leather. The texture is dense, ‘horizontal’ in the expression of director Jean Lupatelli. The grapes are from the domaine’s 2.7 hectares, all on the ‘terres rouges’ section of the appellation with iron-rich clay soils, which makes this a substantial wine. Cellar this for seven to 10 years before opening and enjoy over the next three decades." ~95 Decanter

"The 2023 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is a success, offering up aromas of cherries, sweet red berries, iris and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate that's elegantly rich and textural, with sweet tannins and a saline, perfumed finish." ~94 Wine Advocate
