About The Wine

Domaine de l'Arlot sits two kilometers south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, a Burgundy estate built on walls raised in the eighteenth century and expanded through the nineteenth. When AXA Millesimes acquired it in 1987, they added Les Suchots Premier Cru — one of the best-sited parcels in Vosne-Romanee, sitting directly below Richebourg and across from Romanee-Saint-Vivant. The proximity isn't marketing poetry; it's geology. The same limestone backbone that feeds the grands crus feeds these fifty-year-old vines.

The domaine is certified organic, practicing biodynamic, guided by the philosophy Jean-Pierre de Smet codified in 2002: the more one knows, the less one interferes. Jacques Devauges picks slightly riper for density; Geraldine Godot maintains the less-is-more ethos. The 2023 was de-stemmed, fermented with ambient yeast, and aged fifteen months in 228-liter barrels — forty percent new — then two months in stainless steel to settle.

The nose opens on crushed violet, iris, raspberry, morello cherry, and a lifted hint of white pepper. The palate is supple and silky, medium-bodied with soft tannins and a long, airy finish. With time the aromas shift toward spice, liquorice, undergrowth, and leather — the kind of evolution that makes premier cru Burgundy worth cellaring. This is what Pinot Noir does when the terroir matters and no one tries to engineer it into something louder.

James Suckling scored it 95 points for its purity and silky texture. Jancis Robinson gave it 17.5+. The wine proves what a number of respected Burgundy experts have argued for years: Les Suchots is finer than many a grand cru Echezeaux, and this parcel is one of the appellation's most coveted holdings. For collectors building serious Burgundy depth, this is the kind of wine that quietly justifies itself every time the cork is pulled.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"This wine is so translucent and pure, with vivid aromas of cherries, blood oranges, potpourri, cured meat and autumn leaves. The palate is seamless, with fine-grained tannins and a silken palate that delivers power with a high level of refinement and polish. A wonderful example of this famed premier cru. Drink or hold." ~95 James Suckling

"The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the vivacious red cherry/crushed strawberry fruit and just a touch of incense. Very poised, the palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. It is slightly ferrous toward the finish that lingers nicely. This is not a powerful Vosne-Romanée, but it will drink well for 12 to 15 years. Very fine." ~94 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot is located 2 kilometres south of Nuits Saint Georges in Côte de Nuits Burgundy. Jean-Charles Vienot, heir and owner at the end of the eighteenth century, built a wall around the domaine creating the Clos de l'Arlot. In 1891, Jules Belin purchased the property and enlarged it through acquisitions of Clos des Forêts Saint Georges and Clos du Chapeau. AXA Millésimes acquired the buildings and vines from Belin's heirs in early 1987. AXA Millésimes acquired Vosne Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru and Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru vineyards. Certified organic, practicing biodynamic Les Suchots is a Premier Cru vineyard in the commune of Vosne-Romanée. Les Suchots is described as 'finer than many a grand cru Echézeaux which it abuts' and produces 'rich, sumptuous wines of the highest quality'.
