About The Wine

Domaine Michel Gros is a serious name in Vosne-Romanee. Michel started his own domaine in 1978 with two hectares in the Hautes-Cotes, made his first vintage in 1979, and spent the next two decades assembling what matters: parcels in Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-St-Denis, and when his father Jean retired in 1995, Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot and the monopole Premier Cru Clos des Reas. That monopole celebrated its 150th vintage in the Gros family in 2009. The estate is built on patient acquisition and long memory.

This is the village Nuits-Saint-Georges — the appellation that gives the Cote de Nuits its name. It sits just south of Vosne, deeper and more structured than its neighbor, with a spine of limestone and red clay that pushes darker fruit and firmer tannin. Pinot from here doesn't whisper; it speaks clearly.

The wine sees fifty percent new oak and comes from vines that ripen early, protected by the estate's walled parcels. The soil drains fast — red clay over oligocene marl with limestone blocks — and the fruit arrives ripe, sometimes bordering on over-ripe, which gives the tannins their softness. No hard edges. The style is tensile and fresh, with fine-grained tannin and a long, spiced finish.

Crushed strawberry, cranberry, dried violets, and incense on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and straight, with red-currant intensity, silky texture, and a finish that runs long on herbs and spice.

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Michel Gros

The Domaine Gros dates to the early 1800s. After Jean Gros retired in the early 1990s, the domaine was split into 4 estates. Michel Gros inherited the Monopole 1er Cru vineyard 'Clos Reas' and other parcels. Michel has been steadily acquiring other vineyards and today farms around 18 hectares in Vosne-Romanée and surrounding villages. Michel Gros has 40 years of experience as a winemaker. Domaine Michel Gros is located in Vosne-Romanée, one of the most prestigious villages on the Côte d'Or. The domaine has been the sole owner of the Vosne-Romanée premier cru Clos des Réas for the past century and a half. Michel's father, Jean Gros, bought close to 1000 parcels of land in the Hautes-Côtes over five years, then spent another five years regrouping them.
