About The Wine

Along with François Raveneau — his father René's brother-in-law — Domaine René et Vincent Dauvissat is one of the two undisputed reference points for great Chablis.

The family has estate-bottled under its own name since 1931, when Robert Dauvissat became one of the appellation's first domaine-bottlers in an era ruled by bulk wine. René built the reputation; Vincent joined in 1976 and took over in 1989, and the fourth generation, Ghislain and Étiennette, joined in 2013. Across roughly eleven hectares spanning every Chablis tier, Vincent has farmed biodynamically since around 2002, quietly and without seeking certification.

The cellar work is famously traditional: hand-harvested fruit, whole-bunch pressing with no destemming, indigenous-yeast fermentation split between enameled steel and wood, and spontaneous malolactic.

The wines then age in 6-to-8-year-old oak barrels — never new — so the oak lends body and structure without imposing its own flavor. There's no lees stirring and no fining; only the winter cold settles the wine. It's a recipe designed to let Kimmeridgian terroir speak.

Les Clos is the grandest of Chablis's seven Grand Cru climats, and Dauvissat's bottling comes from old vines of fifty-plus years on the famous south-facing slope. If his Les Preuses is all ethereal lift, Les Clos is its broader, more assertive counterpart — Vincent himself calls the two "opposites."

The 2023 is full-bodied and multidimensional, layering ripe peach, almond paste and beeswax over wet stone, oyster shell and a saline, mineral core, with bright acidity and abundant extract framing a very long finish.

Powerful and youthfully austere, it's a wine built to be cellared, not rushed — the kind that rewards a decade of patience and ages for thirty years or more.

Eye: Pale lemon-gold with a luminous sheen.

Nose: Cool and restrained — wet stone, white flowers and oyster shell over ripe peach, quince, almond paste, beeswax and orange oil, with a marine, saline edge.

Palate: Full-bodied and multidimensional; a deep, concentrated, lavishly textured core is reined in by a bright line of acidity and dense structuring extract, like rolling a pebble around the mouth, closing hugely long and saline.

Drinking Window: Best from ~2030; core window 2033–2050, with the structure to go well beyond (critic-derived estimate).

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

~ 97 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

The 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is broader in gesture and more assertive than its other grand cru sibling. Aromas of peach, almond paste, beeswax and orange oil intertwine with a marine nuance. The palate is full-bodied and multidimensional, its concentration and lavish texture moderated by a bright line of acidity and abundant structuring extract, concluding in a long, saline finish. While markedly different from Les Preuses, it is no less thrilling and should age effortlessly for at least three decades—assuming the cork does its part. ~ 97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This was relatively closed out of barrel – imposing and powerful, but not seductive. A year after bottling, it has blossomed into stupendous wine with notes of ripe apricot, quince, marzipan and hay. It is undoubtedly substantial, with enormous amounts of extract and just enough acidity to balance it out. 'Chewy' is how Dauvissat described it, as if one wanted a knife and fork. This is special wine, but it is far from ready to drink. Give it 15 years and drink it over the next 40 after that. ~ 96 Decanter

The 2023 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet that is slightly less reduced than the Les Preuses at the moment. This has good intensity. It's not the most complex that I have ever tasted from Dauvissat, but this is nicely poised. The palate is very elegant and nuanced, with exquisite balance, but you really feel the weight and depth on the back palate. There's a lovely tingle of spice on the aftertaste as this lingers in the mouth. The 2023 is outstanding. ~ 95 Vinous Media
