About The Wine

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best-known producers in Alsace, with a winegrowing lineage stretching back to 1620. The domaine was created in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind, and today it's run by Olivier Humbrecht — the first Frenchman to qualify as Master of Wine. Forty hectares of estate vineyards, farmed biodynamically since the early days, with yields held to 30-40 hectoliters per hectare. That level of rigor is the entire house in one number.

Clos Windsbuhl is one of the domaine's Grand Cru holdings, where Pinot Gris finds its most profound expression. Alsace Grand Cru sites are the region's crown jewels, classified for their singular terroir and the precision they bring to the glass. This is Pinot Gris at its most serious: structured, mineral-driven, built for the cellar.

The 2023 vintage shows pale gold in the glass. The nose is marked by noble long full lees contact, showing aromas of complex reduction — grilled, smoked, toasted — with an underlying panoply of white fruits. The palate is precise, tense, fleshy, with beautiful length and superb expression of limestone terroir. The finish shows ripe soft complex bitterness and extraordinary salivation resulting from magnesium richness of limestone.

James Suckling scored it 98 points. This is a great wine for laying down.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

How could a dry pinot gris be more radically cool and focused than this mind-blowing wine? The freshness and concentration are equally dangerous. Either you will think this is absurd or it will be a revelation for you. I love the silky texture that makes this so hard to resist in the extremely long, super-subtle finish. Under 13% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. ~98 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht only produces wines from its own vineyards. The domaine has total vineyard holdings of around 40 hectares (99 acres). Zind-Humbrecht took a pioneering role in producing Alsace wines in concentrated, fruity style using low yields (around 30-40 hectoliter per hectare) and biodynamic viticulture. Zind-Humbrecht introduced a sweetness index on labels from the 2001 vintage, ranging from 1 to 5. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best known producers in Alsace. Producers calling themselves 'Domaine', such as Zind-Humbrecht, are supposed to only use grapes from their own vineyards. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht sells a cuvée called Zind, a blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Auxerrois, which is sold as Vin de table de France because it does not qualify for AOC status. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace follows biodynamic viticulture.
