About The Wine

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best-known producers in Alsace, with a winegrowing lineage stretching back to 1620. The domaine was created in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind, and today it's run by Olivier Humbrecht — the first Frenchman to qualify as Master of Wine. Forty hectares of estate vineyards, farmed biodynamically since the early days, with yields held to 30-40 hectoliters per hectare. That level of rigor is the entire house in one number.

The Clos Saint Urbain Pinot Gris from Rangen de Thann is the estate's most esteemed wine — a Grand Cru from volcanic soils that delivers intensity and mineral precision in equal measure. Vines here average 55 years old, rooted in some of the steepest, most dramatic terrain in Alsace. This is Pinot Gris at its most serious: majestic, finely detailed, built for the cellar.

The 2023 vintage shows bright intense yellow with gold edges. The nose is bold and powerful — flinty aromas, smoke, wet humus, the unmistakable signature of Rangen's volcanic rock. On the palate, surprisingly tight and elegant despite the concentration: mandarin orange, creamy peach, toasted almond, salted honey. A velvety structure develops through the finish, with saline acidity cutting clean through the richness. Residual sugar sits at just 10 grams per liter; this is dense and layered, never heavy.

James Suckling awarded it a perfect 100 points. The optimum drinking window runs from now through 2043 and beyond — pull the cork tonight or let it develop for two decades. Either way, this is Alsace at its most uncompromising.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The brain-rattling concentration, smokiness and flinty energy of this unique dry pinot gris don’t fit in any box on this planet. Definitely not full-bodied, but how could you say it is medium-bodied with this intensity of expression? In spite of the power, it shoots almost weightlessly up into the heavens and pulls you with it. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. ~100 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht only produces wines from its own vineyards. The domaine has total vineyard holdings of around 40 hectares (99 acres). Zind-Humbrecht took a pioneering role in producing Alsace wines in concentrated, fruity style using low yields (around 30-40 hectoliter per hectare) and biodynamic viticulture. Zind-Humbrecht introduced a sweetness index on labels from the 2001 vintage, ranging from 1 to 5. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best known producers in Alsace. Producers calling themselves 'Domaine', such as Zind-Humbrecht, are supposed to only use grapes from their own vineyards. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht sells a cuvée called Zind, a blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Auxerrois, which is sold as Vin de table de France because it does not qualify for AOC status. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace follows biodynamic viticulture.
