About The Wine

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best-known producers in Alsace, with a winegrowing lineage stretching back to 1620. The domaine was created in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind, and today it's run by Olivier Humbrecht — the first Frenchman to qualify as Master of Wine. Forty hectares of estate vineyards, farmed biodynamically since the early days, with yields held to 30-40 hectoliters per hectare. That level of rigor is the entire house in one number.

Hengst Grand Cru is one of Alsace's classified crown jewels, where Riesling finds its most transparent expression — a direct line from limestone and marl to fruit to finish. These Grand Cru sites are classified for their singular terroir and the precision they bring to the glass, and Hengst delivers Riesling at its most electric and mineral-driven.

The 2023 vintage began with a cool spring, then flowering at the end of June was marked by an intense heatwave reaching 38°C. Welcome rainfall in August allowed the vines to regain their balance, resulting in healthy grapes at harvest time. The small grapes were very ripe and in good health — concentration without sacrifice of nerve.

In the glass: medium- to full-bodied wine with citrus and stone fruit aromas. Yellow fruit, honey, saffron, yellow peach, yellow melon and passion fruit on the nose. Flavors of white peach and citrus. Densely mineral and incredibly focused dry Riesling — the kind of wine that makes supermarket bottles taste emotionally vacant.

James Suckling scored it 98 points. This is Riesling at its most serious: structured, mineral-driven, built for the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Power and purity seem effortlessly interwoven in this densely minerally and incredibly focused dry riesling. The energy and vitality of this medium- to full-bodied wine are off the scale. It really needs time for the citrus and stone fruit aromas to open up, but it’s already very exciting. From the eastern side of this site that faces the Black Forest with shallow and stony soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. ~98 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht only produces wines from its own vineyards. The domaine has total vineyard holdings of around 40 hectares (99 acres). Zind-Humbrecht took a pioneering role in producing Alsace wines in concentrated, fruity style using low yields (around 30-40 hectoliter per hectare) and biodynamic viticulture. Zind-Humbrecht introduced a sweetness index on labels from the 2001 vintage, ranging from 1 to 5. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best known producers in Alsace. Producers calling themselves 'Domaine', such as Zind-Humbrecht, are supposed to only use grapes from their own vineyards. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht sells a cuvée called Zind, a blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Auxerrois, which is sold as Vin de table de France because it does not qualify for AOC status. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace follows biodynamic viticulture.
