About The Wine

Finca La Carrodilla is the second project of the Pérez Castro family, owners of the celebrated Hacienda La Lomita, and a landmark in the story of Mexican wine.

Founded with the mission of creating Mexico's first certified organic vineyard, the winery received certification under the California Certified Organic Farmers program — a distinction that drew skepticism when first proposed but has since established the estate as an industry leader in sustainable winemaking.

The name itself is a tribute to the Virgin de la Carrodilla, patron saint of winemakers, considered the protector of vineyards and harvests throughout the region.

Situated at roughly 1,000 feet of elevation in the heart of the Valle de Guadalupe, approximately ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, the 20-hectare estate farms its red calcareous soils using biodynamic methods — including a flock of sheep that works the vineyard rows, clearing land and fertilizing the soil, alongside herbal compost and a near 13,000-square-foot organic vegetable garden.

The winery is one of only two operations in Mexico certified both organic and biodynamic. At the cellar, winemaker Gustavo González — who served as head winemaker for the famed Super Tuscan Masseto in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and made all of Mondavi's red wines including Opus One from 2002 to 2010 — brings a pedigree that is rare for any winery, anywhere in the world.

Canto de Luna ("Song of the Moon") is the only red blend in Finca La Carrodilla's portfolio — a deliberate departure from the estate's signature focus on single varietals.

The 2023 vintage saw the inclusion of considerably more Syrah than previous editions, resulting in a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Syrah fermented in open-top tanks, extended on-skin maceration, and finished in concrete — no oak.

Every winemaking choice leaves the fruit airing rather than altered; you taste the earth, not the impress of the cellar. The labels for all Finca La Carrodilla wines are commissioned works by Tijuana-based female artist Foi Jiménez.

Eye: Deep ruby with violet hues and vivid, youthful brilliance.

Nose: Aromas of raspberry compote, freshly cut red berries, blackberry, and tobacco, with secondary notes of sun-warmed clay, clove, vanilla, and a mineral undercurrent.

Palate: Generous and full yet grounded in bright acidity and fine tannins. Tempranillo leads with red fruit lift; Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon provide structure, tension, and a spice-edged finish of clove and vanilla. No oak aging keeps the expression transparent and fruit-driven, with a medium-to-long, clean finish.
