About The Wine

Giacosa Fratelli is a fourth-generation family winery in the heart of Piedmont, and the name has been synonymous with serious Barolo for over a century. In 1895 Giuseppe Giacosa was a sharecropper working the hills of Langhe alongside his brothers, dreaming of owning a winery they could not afford. He won the lottery with numbers he dreamed, bought the cellar with the winnings, and passed it down father to son, brother to cousins, for the next 130 years.

This Barbera d'Alba comes from the Bussia vineyard — one of the finest crus in Castiglione Falletto, a site Giacosa Fratelli has worked for decades and used for their single-vineyard Barolo. Barbera grown here gets the structure and minerality of hillside Nebbiolo without the tannin, which means it drinks beautifully young but has the bones to age.

The 2023 vintage in Piedmont delivered balance and freshness — Barbera's natural high acidity stayed bright, the fruit stayed focused. This wine shows clear garnet with ruby highlights, opens with dried rose petals and violet, then red cherry, sour plum, and iron mineral. A thread of tar and licorice underneath. Medium-full body with high natural acidity. Red fruit dominates — cherry, raspberry, blood orange peel. Structured tannins, still young but already expressive. Long mineral finish with a hint of tobacco on the fade.

From a vineyard that produces 94-point Barolo, the quality-per-dollar here is exceptional. This is the kind of wine that makes $40 Italian reds feel overpriced.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Dark raspberries, cocoa and orange peel on the nose. Silky and plummy yet with focus and tension, a medium to full body, and very fine tannins. ~91 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Giuseppe Giacosa

Founded in 1895 in Neive, the heart of Piedmont's Langhe region, Giuseppe Giacosa is the winery that laid the foundation for what is now Giacosa Fratelli, a family-owned estate spanning five generations.

Today, the winery farms vineyards across Barolo, Barbaresco, and Alba, producing classic Piedmont wines that balance tradition with modern sustainability while showcasing the character of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis.
