About The Wine

The Prum family has stood at the summit of Mosel Riesling for over four centuries, and Joh. Jos. Prum — founded in 1911 when the original S.A. Prum estate was divided — represents the pinnacle of that legacy. Sebastian Prum developed the estate's distinct style during the 1930s and 1940s, a vision now carried forward by Dr. Manfred Prum and his daughter Dr. Katharina since 2003. JJ Prum wines command auction prices that prove their standing: in 2013, twelve bottles of the 1983 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Cap sold for $2,450 at Zachys.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the crown jewel of the estate's 14 hectares — a steep, slate-driven vineyard that delivers Riesling of floral intensity and laser precision. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted, rooted directly into the mineral-rich soil that gives these wines their electric backbone. The Auslese Gold Cap designation marks the estate's most concentrated, age-worthy bottlings — wines built to cellar for decades and evolve into something no other region on earth can replicate.

The 2023 vintage delivers one of the great Mosel Auslese masterpieces of modern times. The wine opens with intense floral splendor — peach iced tea, almond tart, pine nuts, pine cones, blossom honey — yet remains remarkably pure and precise. On the palate, it's juicy and structured, rich yet savory, with a persistently saline finish that stretches long and mouth-filling. At 8% stated alcohol, it's built for the cellar: drink 2030–2050.

This is the Riesling serious collectors chase. James Suckling awarded it 99 points. The 6-pack format gives you six bottles to lay down and watch mature into liquid history.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

One of the great Mosel Auslese masterpieces of modern times, this has all the floral splendor of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard site on the medium-bodied palate, through which an extremely delicate thread of floral honey flows. Then the exotic fruit aromas cascade over you at the extremely long and precise finish. Perfect balance makes this seem much less sweet than it really is. ~99 James Suckling

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule / Auction) opens with a very intense but elegant and delicate as well as flinty bouquet with smoked fruit aromas. Very refined and highly elegant on the palate, this is a super finessed and filigreed, weightless, crystalline and irresistible Auslese with a long, intense yet always refined and stimulating saline finish. A fabulous Auslese indeed! 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. ~99 WA

This version is singing, with its alluring beam of sweet apricot, persimmon and apple flavors still coiled. Round and silky, showing rich, decadent lashes of honeysuckle, with notes of savory dried grass and a kick of ground ginger adding pleasing spiciness. A salty mineral vein powers through, while zesty peach skin acidity keeps the energy high throughout. ~95 WS
