About The Wine

The Prum family has stood at the summit of Mosel Riesling for over four centuries, and Joh. Jos. Prum — founded in 1911 when the original S.A. Prum estate was divided — represents the pinnacle of that legacy. Sebastian Prum developed the estate's distinct style during the 1930s and 1940s, a vision now carried forward by Dr. Manfred Prum and his daughter Dr. Katharina since 2003. These are wines that command auction prices proving their standing: twelve bottles of a single earlier Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Cap bottling sold for $2,450 at Zachys.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the crown jewel of the estate's 14 hectares — a steep, slate-driven vineyard that delivers Riesling of floral intensity and laser precision. Seventy percent of the vines are ungrafted, rooted directly into the mineral-rich soil that gives these wines their electric backbone. This is the site that separates good Mosel from great Mosel.

The 2023 vintage delivers one of the great Mosel Spatlese masterpieces of modern times. The wine opens with intense floral splendor — peach iced tea, almond tart, pine nuts, pine cones, blossom honey — yet remains remarkably pure and precise. On the palate, it's juicy and structured, rich yet savory, with a persistently saline and mouth-filling finish that only Mosel slate can produce. At 8% stated alcohol, this is a wine built to cellar for decades and evolve into something no other region on earth can replicate.

James Suckling scored it 97 points. The drinking window is 2030–2050, but the depth is there now if you can't wait. This is what four hundred years of obsession tastes like.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The sensuous curves of Art Nouveau design and joyful flourishes of rococo both give an idea of what Mosel riesling elegance means, but in a masterpiece like this it takes on a totally distinctive feeling unlike anything else on Planet Wine. The white peach fruit, white flower aromas and slatey minerality all tingle on your palate, then flicker on and on in a totally fascinating manner in the nearly endless finish. The touch of sweetness is already beautifully integrated, although the wine just began a decades-long life. ~97 James Suckling

The 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a serene, stony, salty slaty breeze. The palate is exquisitely fine and very bright, luminous even, soaring upward as it reaches down into the slate, embodying the total elegance of the site. Slenderness and serenity are exemplary. ~96 Vinous Media

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is concentrated and very intense on the fruit-driven, deep and spicy nose. The wine is very elegant and refined on the dense and seriously structured, salivating palate that is a promise for the future and endlessly salty in the present. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. ~95 WA
