About the Wine
"Today, Kistler Vineyards’ Chardonnay sites stretch from western Sonoma to Carneros and represent some of the very best vineyards in the region. The two single vineyard Pinot Noirs, which are less well known, are located in Russian River Valley." ~Decanter
In the heart of Sonoma County, nestled among picturesque vineyards, lies the extraordinary Kistler Vineyards. Founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler, their vision was revolutionary: To produce character-driven Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that reflect the essence of California's diverse terroirs, and that rival the finest wines from Burgundy. This forward-thinking approach has shaped Kistler's legacy for over four decades, crafting wines of distinction without compromise.
In 2008, Bill Price, the longtime owner of Durell Vineyards, joined forces with Steve, ensuring that Kistler Vineyards would remain a family-owned venture. To lay the groundwork for the next forty years, Jason Kesner joined Steve in the cellar, guiding the winery’s evolution through a decade of collaboration in both viticulture and winemaking.
Steve Kistler, a Stanford graduate, is a true pioneer who redefined California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His significance in California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is attributed to his dedication to crafting exceptional wines with a focus on single-vineyard expressions of the varietal. With an unwavering commitment to the heritage clones used in his vineyards, Kistler's exploration of Sonoma's cool coastal climate has been key to producing wines with unparalleled complexity and structure.
Kistler Vineyards owns or leases just under 60 acres of prime Pinot Noir vineyards in some of the coolest sites of western Sonoma County. Their low-yield vineyards, combined with organic farming practices, allow for the production of wines that showcase the depth and precision unique to Kistler’s approach to Pinot Noir.
The New York Times named Steve as “A Cult Winemaker” applauding his contribution to California Chardonnay. And Food and Wine Magazine's Wine Guide considers this Chardonnays the "Best of the Best" among "Star Producers”.
Aging: Aged in French oak barrels for 12-14 months, with roughly 35% of the barrels being new.
