Once part of the Antinori family empire and later owned by Robert Mondavi, Ornellaia is now proudly under the stewardship of the Frescobaldi family. Axel Heinz, the brilliant winemaker, and the legendary Michel Rolland as consultant continue the tradition of crafting extraordinary wines.

Tasting Notes

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2023 opens with ripe blueberry and blackberry aromas. Generous and enticing flavours ensue and complement a beautiful balance between breadth and freshness. An enduring finish goes hand in hand with silky tannins that elevate the wine’s elegance.

The 2023 Le Volte Dell'Ornellaia is a saturated red/ruby color and is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, raised in used barrels for around 10 months. Always a wine leaning into the fruity and approachable side of things, the nose is fruity and fresh with aromas of candied flowers, crushed raspberries, red apples, and fresh stony earth. Medium to full-bodied, it’s very elegant with a joyful ease. It’s a great snapshot into these wines, which are mighty tasty now and have a lot of character. Drink 2025-2035. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

A blanket of crushed rose petals on the opening beats, good lift and freshness here, love the raspberry fruits. This is a great value entry to the Ornellaia range, and more appealing than many Super Tuscans that are many times the price – a real buy, and one of the secrets of Tuscany in my opinion. Matured partly in used Ornellaia barriques and partly in concrete, the 2023 Le Volte has seductive aromas of dark cherry compote and raspberry coulis with a waft of balsamic herbs. In the mouth there's good concentration of fruit and a silky flow, with crunchy dark berries and a vibrant streak of that raspberry coulis. It's all brought together by fresh acidity and a breezy, if slightly astringent, finish. ~91 Decanter

The 2023 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a total delight. Fresh, aromatic and vibrant, Ornellaia’s Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods in an affordable package. A burst of bright, red-toned fruit opens first, followed by scents of tobacco, cedar and dried herbs. This classy, polished red is very nicely done. There’s a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend these days, and it works quite well. ~90 Vinous Media
