About The Wine

Laura Catena founded Luca in 1999 with a singular mission: rescue Mendoza's forgotten old-vine Malbec vineyards and prove they could produce wines that rival anything in the world. She's a fourth-generation Malbec grower who pioneered direct grower relationships in Argentina, tracking down century-old parcels that were being dumped into bulk wine and bottling them as single-vineyard expressions. Luca became the first Argentine winery to bottle all of its Malbec exclusively from old vines — and the results speak: ten Top 100 wines and counting.

The Old Vine Malbec is the entry point to that vision. It's sourced from ungrafted vines across three of the Uco Valley's most respected sites — La Consulta, Paraje Altamira, and Pampa El Cepillo — all high-elevation, all old wood. According to Laura and her winemaker Luis Reginato, old vines carry genetic diversity that translates to grace and complexity you can't replicate with young fruit. The 2023 vintage came in slightly lighter than previous years, reflecting a cooler season that delivered precision over power.

The wine spent twelve months in French barrique — 35% new, 65% second-use — enough to add structure and a whisper of mocha without burying the fruit. What you get is classic Uco Valley Malbec: dense purple in the glass, spice and black cherry cola on the nose, notes of cocoa and espresso on the finish. James Suckling called it "precise, sharp, linear and super elegant" and scored it 96 points. Vinous and Wine Advocate both landed at 91-93, praising its lift and purity.

This is $29 wine that drinks like the $50 Malbecs Napa Cab buyers reach for when they want depth without the tannin grip. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it five years — the structure's there either way.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This shows plums, bark and charcoal on the nose. The palate is precise, sharp, linear and super elegant, with velvety tannins and crunchy fruit. It's long, refined and very stylish. Drink now. ~96 James Suckling

The 2023 Malbec Old Vine was sourced from La Consulta, Paraje Altamira and Pampa El Cepillo in the Uco Valley. It aged for 12 months in 35% new and 65% second-use French barrels. With clear notes of plum, blackberry, a hint of balsamic herbs and a touch of jam, it is juicy and indulgent. The palate shows ripe fruit and a background of oak. This is a bit lighter than in previous years, reflecting the character of 2023. ~93 Vinous

The 2023 Old Vine Malbec combines ungrafted vines from six Uco Valley growers who previously sold grapes for use in bulk wines. It was destemmed and fermented in stainless tank before maturing for 12 months in 35% new barrique. Opening with a pleasant nose of red and blue fruits, anise and dried spices, the palate is plush and straightforward, concluding with a lifted, fragrant finish. ~91 Wine Advocate

The nose reveals enticing aromas of crushed berries leading the way to a juicy palate filled with rich dark fruit flavors and a hint of rosemary. Framed by gripping tannins and vibrant acidity, this full-bodied Malbec features a distinctive chalky texture and a long lasting finish. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

Hints of roasted herbs and loam lead but quickly give way to the core flavors of Santa Rosa plum and cherry, culminating with crunchy acidity, mineral and cocoa powder notes that fill out the structured finish. Drink now through 2036. ~91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Luca

Luca is Laura Catena's old-vine project in the Uco Valley, named for her first son and launched the year he was born. It was among the first Argentine labels to bottle Malbec entirely from old, ungrafted vines — the bet being that older fruit carries more genetic depth than young plantings can fake. The wines come off high-altitude sites near 3,500 feet, where wide day-night temperature swings keep the fruit bright instead of jammy.
