About The Wine

David Ramey founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996 after interning at Petrus and leading programs at Dominus, Chalk Hill, and Matanzas Creek.

His advocacy for the Burgundian method — whole-cluster pressing, barrel fermentation with ambient yeast, full malolactic conversion, extended lees aging — put California Chardonnay back on the serious-wine map after the over-oaked backlash of the '90s.

The debut vintage was 260 cases. Today the winery crushes fruit from some of Russian River Valley's most respected old-vine sites, and the wines prove Ramey's thesis: richness doesn't require new oak; it requires minerality, acidity, and the right dirt.

The 2023 Russian River Valley bottling is a five-vineyard blend — Lafranchi, Martinelli Laughlin Road, Kilcullen, Dutton Sebastopol, and Westside Farms — planted between 1978 and 2017. Grapes were harvested over a month-long window, September 13 to October 14, pressed whole-cluster, fermented with native yeast, and aged twelve months in 10% new French oak.

The approach is Burgundian restraint applied to California ripeness: the oak is there for lees contact, not for flavor, and Ramey adds tartaric acid during malolactic to keep the pH tight — a practice straight out of Cote de Beaune.

The result is a Chardonnay that combines the stone-fruit generosity Russian River is known for with the kind of precision and drive you expect from serious white Burgundy. Wine Advocate calls it "luxuriously ripe" with "fireworks of fresh acidity" and a "very long, perfumed finish." Decanter praises its "beautifully balanced" structure, "exotic baking spices," and layers of guava, white peach, and mango. James Suckling highlights the "energetic acidity" and "sense of strength and structure." Four critics, four scores in the 93–95 range — all of them pointing to the same thing: this is grown-up California Chardonnay, built to cellar and built to pair.

Stone fruit, pineapple, white peach, guava, and macerated mango with ginger, toasted brioche, and honey.

Green apple, lemon zest, wet stones, vanilla, and toasted hazelnut on the palate. Fresh herbal accents — lemon verbena, vetiver, grated ginger, tangerine — and crunchy sea salt on the finish. Fireworks of acidity, luxuriously ripe, very long.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Grapes for the 2023 Chardonnay Russian River Valley were harvested over the course of a month, from initial picks on September 13 to the last pick on October 14. It was barrel-fermented, underwent full malolactic conversion and was matured for 12 months in 10% new French oak barrels. It has open, inviting aromas of stone fruit and pineapple, panna cotta, ginger, toasted brioche and honey. The palate combines concentrated, layered flavors with fireworks of fresh acidity, and it has a very long, perfumed finish. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Sourced from Lafranchi, Westside Farms, Sonoma Foothills, Martinelli Laughlin, Kilcullen, Dutton Sebastopol, and Frank Johnson—all cool-climate sites with low-vigour soils such as Goldridge loam, planted between 1978 and 2017 and aged for 12 months on the lees in barrel (10% new French oak). This is clean and sleek, a beautifully balanced medium-bodied Chardonnay with luxuriously ripe stone and orchard fruit. Exotic baking spices complement layers of guava, white peach, and macerated mango with apricot. But what’s most impressive is the intensity and purity of the fruit—so precisely delineated, profoundly spicy, and laser-focused. At $50, this is one of the finest, most balanced, and well-structured Chardonnays from the Russian River Valley at this price point. ~95 Decanter

Leaps out of the glass with intensity, offering vibrant fruit flavors of crisp Meyer lemon, apple and pear. Aromatic details of tangerine, lime sherbet and lemon blossoms add complexity alongside fresh herbal accents of lemon balm and sweetgrass. Crushed rock minerality lingers on the long, expressive finish. ~94 Wine Spectator

Energetic acidity and ample fruit flavors give this full-bodied wine a sense of strength and structure. After a blast of green apple, pine bough and citrus aromas, an array of subtle baking spice, ripe pear and baked apple flavors come out as you sip. Drink now. ~94 James Suckling

The downright delicious 2023 Ramey ‘Russian River Valley’ Chardonnay is forward and juicy on the mouth. Caramel and poached pear mingle well with buttered French bread and roasted pineapple, and copious stony minerals. The texture and sense of freshness here is just sensational. This has to be up there with the finest Ramey ‘Russian River Valley’ that I have tasted. Drink 2025-2033. ~ 94 Owen Bargreen
