About The Wine

Schrader Cellars is one of the most awarded wineries in the history of American wine. The Schrader name is synonymous with outstanding, high-scoring Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that is very limited and highly sought-after. Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has crafted so many 100-point and near-perfect wines, we've lost count.

There is not much to be said about Schrader that hasn't already made headlines. Fred Schrader, an art and antiquity trader, attended the Napa Valley Wine Auction in the late '90s. He fell in love with Napa Valley and then met Andy Beckstoffer and Thomas Rivers Brown. Together, they began sourcing fruit from some of the most prestigious vineyard sites in the valley, including the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Stags Leap District’s historic Wappo Hill Vineyard.

Wappo Hill Vineyard, in the Stags Leap District, was first planted in 1969. Produced from 100% Clone 685 Cabernet Sauvignon, this bottling is sourced from hillside vines planted on well-drained, gravelly, and clay-loam soils. The vines thrive with ample afternoon sun bookended by cool mornings and evenings, producing intensely flavored fruit with exceptionally balanced acidity.

The 2023 vintage stands out as one of the most remarkable in Schrader’s history. Napa Valley enjoyed its longest growing season in over a decade, defined by steady, moderate temperatures that allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and fully. The result was exceptional balancegrapes with both power and finesse, depth and purity. These ideal conditions yielded wines of outstanding concentration, structure, and harmony. As winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown shared, “It should end up being one of the best vintages of Schrader we’ve ever bottled.”

Aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud French oak barrels

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine features notes of blackberry, red cherry, and briary aromas that combine with pleasing threads of baking spice, floral petal, and dusty earth tones.

This stunning wine shows the tremendous power of a classic Napa Valley Cabernet with a polished, long-lasting finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Rocking levels of red, blue, and black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, and flowery, spicy notes all shine in the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Wappo Hill Vineyard, a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, seamless barrel sample that has the vintage's pure, focused, structured, and incredibly impressive style. ~ 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck

Powered by great balance and fresh acidity, this offers energized red and black fruit on an almost tangy texture. Full-bodied and firm in tannins but also bright and vivid, with raspberries, red cherries, dark plums, dark chocolate, and cocoa. Drinkable now and best from 2030. ~ 96 James Suckling
