About The Wine

Screaming Eagle stands as one of Napa Valley's most sought-after estates. Founded by Jean Phillips in 1986 on a historic Oakville vineyard, the property gained immediate cult status when its 1992 debut earned 99 points from Robert Parker — only 200 cases existed.

Today, under sole ownership of Stan Kroenke and guided by winemaker Nick Gislason since 2011, the estate continues to define what Napa Cabernet can achieve at the highest level.

The Flight was created as a sister wine to the flagship, made from younger vines within the same prestigious Oakville appellation.

Originally named Second Flight, it was renamed simply The Flight in 2015 to signal a companion rather than a second-tier production. While the flagship is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, The Flight leads with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Annual production ranges between 550 and 850 cases — a fraction of what collectors want, priced at two to three times less than the flagship.

Jeb Dunnuck calls the 2023 the best vintage of this cuvee he has tasted at the estate (98 points) and one of the finest Merlots he has tasted from Napa; Decanter's Jonathan Cristaldi rates it 99 and calls it dynamite. Red rose, violet, black cherry and cassis lift from the glass over cedar, earth and chalky minerality.

The palate is layered and pure, with plum, fleshy cherry and pomegranate carried on dense, velvety tannins and a thread of dark cocoa. Both critics place the window at 2025-2026 through 2050.

Red rose, violet, black cherry and cassis on the nose, with spring flowers, cedar, earth and a chalky mineral edge. Medium to full-bodied, pure and layered, with plum, fleshy cherry and pomegranate over ultra-fine, velvety tannins laced with dark cocoa. Long, mouthwatering finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Screaming Eagle's The Flight, the winery's Merlot-driven bottling, is dynamite in 2023. At the pull of the cork, the perfume that lifts out of the glass on this wine is something extraordinary. It really is so remarkably aromatic, with red rose, violet, black cherry fruit, and cherry pit notes, along with a beautiful undercurrent of cedarwood and earth. The palate is super expressive, with a building richness kicked off my a foundation of ultra-fine-grained tannins laced with dark, unsweetened cocoa powder. There's a remarkable density on the mid-palate, and an ultra-pure expression of plum, fleshy cherry, and pomegranate seeds. A stony mineral elegance shines through under all of that fruit and texture. The tannins present like a dense, thick carpet of velvet, and resolve beautifully over a minute of mouthwatering intensity. ~99 Decanter

Absolutely gorgeous and the best vintage of this cuvée I've tasted here, the 2023 Flight shows a deep purple, almost opaque hue and offers a stunning perfume of black cherries, cassis, spring flowers, hints of chalky minerality, and liquid violets. It's absolutely brilliant on the palate, with medium to full body, a pure, graceful, layered mouthfeel, silky yet building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's one of the finest Merlots I've tasted from Napa and will have 20-25 years of longevity. Drink 2025-2050. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle is Napa Valley’s ultimate cult winery, a tiny Oakville estate whose microscopic production and sky-high quality have made it one of the most coveted wines on earth.

Founded by Jean Phillips and elevated by legendary winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett—whose touch also helped define Dalla Valle Maya and Grace Family—the estate became synonymous with precision, purity, and luxury Cabernet.

With gravelly, perfectly drained Oakville soils and obsessive vineyard selection, Screaming Eagle produces only a few hundred cases each year, crafting wines of extraordinary depth, aromatic intensity, and long-term aging potential.
