About The Wine

Five generations, 130 years, and vines that were already in the ground when Teddy Roosevelt was president. Seghesio planted their first Zinfandel in 1895 in Alexander Valley — the original blocks are still producing — and the family has survived earthquakes, Prohibition, the Depression, droughts, and fires without compromising what made them one of Sonoma's oldest winemaking names.

The Old Vine Zinfandel is the flagship, and the name isn't marketing. At Seghesio, "old vine" means a minimum of 50 years in the ground. The fruit for this bottling averages closer to 75. That kind of vine age delivers complexity and concentration younger vines can't touch — deeper roots, lower yields, fruit that's seen decades of weather and learned how to respond.

Winemaker Andy Robinson works in small lots, hand-sorting and fermenting each block individually in open-top fermenters. He identified and isolated an indigenous yeast strain from the estate's Home Ranch Vineyard and uses it exclusively for those wines. The approach is old-world: let the vineyard speak, let the vintage show itself, get out of the way. The blend here is 83% Zinfandel, with Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, and mixed reds rounding out the back end.

The 2023 opens with black plum, dried fig, clay earth, garrigue, and cardamom spice. The palate is a briar patch — red raspberry, blackberry, black cherry — with a luscious, mouth-filling entry that evokes chocolate cherry cordial.

Juicy, supple mid-palate, mouthwatering acidity, hints of baking spice, and a rich, velvety finish built on mature, age-worthy tannins.

This is old-school Zin: bold, spicy, loaded with zest, and relaxed in its own skin. Pull the cork tonight or let it ride another five years — it'll handle both.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This Zinfandel is made with vines aged from 50 to 75 years, offering plenty of character to this bold wine. Aromas of blackberry, red cherry, black plum, liquorice, and baking spices are present, along with notes of chocolate and vanilla that add richness. The acidity remains present and balanced, keeping this wine structured and juicy. ~ 93 Wine Review Online

The 2023 Zinfandel Old Vine is largely from the Saini family vineyard, about 60%, with San Lorenzo fruit from Pete Seghesio and another source. It also includes 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane, 3% Alicante Bouschet, and 2% mixed reds. It pours a deeper purple/ruby color and has bright red fruit alongside darker, more compact berry tones, with rich tannins and a more compact structure and core. It can benefit from another year or more in bottle, as this is not a simple fruity style. Black cherries and brambly earth emerge with full-bodied richness that remains chiseled and reined in. Drink 2026-2036.~ 93 Jeb Dunnuck

Just a gorgeous, mouth-filling, fruity and generous wine that's relaxed in velvety tannins on a full-bodied palate. Flavors of blackberry jam, baked blueberries and a touch of vanilla bean. Drink now. ~ 93 James Suckling

An old-school Zin that's loaded with zest and briar patch, plus raspberry, savory anise and white pepper flavors that end with snappy tannins. Drink now through 2033. 8,154 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator

The nose of this old vine Zin brings concentrated cherry, raspberry liqueur, and cinnamon aromas, while the palate brings plush tannin, supple acidity, and flavors of roasted cherries, berry compote, plum, and licorice through the finish. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
