About The Wine

Tenuta San Guido is the estate behind Sassicaia — the wine that invented the Super Tuscan category and remains the only single-estate wine in Italy with its own DOC. When marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon in Bolgheri in 1948, he wasn't chasing acclaim. He was chasing something better than what Tuscany was making. The 1968 Sassicaia changed Italian wine. Guidalberto is the estate's second wine, and calling it a "second wine" undersells what's in the bottle.

First released with the 2000 vintage after more than twenty years of experimentation, Guidalberto is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca — the ancestor who transformed Bolgheri's agriculture in the early 1800s, building the first mills, churches, and the cypress-lined Viale dei Cipressi that still defines the region. The wine was built for aromatic richness and softness on the palate, the qualities Merlot delivers even with shorter aging. What it offers is full, satisfying drinkability backed by the structure to cellar and refine for years.

The 2023 vintage earned 96 points from both James Suckling and Decanter, 94 from Falstaff, and 93 from Jane Anson. Those aren't second-wine scores. Those are the numbers that prove what the estate already knows: Guidalberto is a wine that stands on its own, not in Sassicaia's shadow. Bolgheri fruit, Sassicaia pedigree, a fraction of the price.

This is the Bordeaux blend Tuscany does better than Bordeaux wants to admit. Pull the cork tonight or let it sit a decade — either way, you're drinking from the estate that rewrote the rules.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Super-fresh with balsamic herb, blueberry and floral aromatics, Guidalberto 2023 has blossomed into a grand vin all of its own. Invigorating cool forest berry flavours mingle with touches of spice and fine, silky tannins. So poised. Wow! ~96 Decanter

This vintage shows a remarkable aromatic profile of Mediterranean herbs, cassis, black cherries, leather and earth with a kind of gamey depth. Full-bodied, it shows velvety, slightly sandy tannins with a firm structure, refreshing integrated acidity and a savory cedar finish. Drinkable now, but best in one or two years. ~96 James Suckling

The 2023 Guidalberto was tasted as a preview and was a preliminary blend of barrel samples prepared for this tasting by the winery team, led by Carlo Paoli. The second sample that was blended was pure and ripe, with detailed layers of youthful cherry liqueur, fresh herbs, and lavender perfume. The palate offers medium to full-bodied richness, with a supple and primary feel, though it starts to reveal its underlying refined structure. While this was an early preliminary look at what the wine could look like, I’m looking forward to next year’s tasting to see how it develops. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Guidalberto is another terrific wine from Tenuta San Guido in this vintage. Aromatic, medium in body and gracious, the 2023 is pure charm. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, spice and blood orange all pulse through a vibrant, refreshing Guidalberto that will drink well on release. The more refined side of Bolgheri is very much on display. This is a fine effort in a year marked by heavy rains and elevated disease pressure. What a delight. ~92 Vinous Media
