About The Wine

Most wine drinkers know Chardonnay is California's dominant white grape. Fewer know that Chenin Blanc has been quietly thriving here for decades — and that in the right hands, it makes something Chardonnay rarely does: tension.

Pear and citrus precision alongside honey and slate, with the kind of racy acidity that makes you reach for the glass again. The Stasis Chenin Blanc is produced in 135-case batches from a single vineyard. It sells out. Then it's gone.

The fruit comes from Jurassic Park Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, where own-rooted Chenin Blanc vines planted in the 1980s grow in sandy, fluffy soils. Own-rooted vines — meaning the grapevine itself is the root, not grafted onto separate rootstock — are rare in California after phylloxera reshaped the industry. These 40-plus-year-old plants draw from the soil differently than grafted vines, producing small, concentrated clusters with vivid varietal character. Jeremy Leffert harvests by hand in the cool morning hours, whole-cluster presses the fruit, and ferments in neutral French oak with the heavy lees — a method that builds texture and complexity without adding wood flavor. The wine ages six months sur lie in barrel, then moves to stainless steel for five more months of maturation before bottling.

The result is dry, fleshy, and precise — not a Chardonnay substitute, but a legitimate white wine that rewards the curious buyer. If you know what Vouvray tastes like, this is the California analogue. If you don't, this is a good place to start. Pear, honeycomb, nectarine, lime zest, ginger spice, and a long finish with the kind of slate-mineral depth that makes it worth opening a second bottle.
