About The Wine

Justin Willett didn't just buy grapes from Fiddlestix. In 2021 he bought the vineyard.

That changes things. Fiddlestix sits on Santa Rosa Road, directly across the street from Sanford & Benedict — the site that essentially drew the Sta. Rita Hills map. Gazos and Botella clay loam underneath, laced with chert and Monterey shale. Cold Pacific air pushing through the valley all day long. Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars planted it and made it famous. Willett farms it as estate fruit now, and it's the first block he picks every harvest.

He's been doing this since 2005, back when Tyler was eight barrels borrowed in the corner of someone else's cellar. The house method hasn't changed much: native yeast, open-top fermentation, partial whole cluster, a deliberately light hand with new oak. Nothing gets pushed.

Which is what makes this bottling the interesting one in the range. It's 100% Pinot Noir, but it's built on graphite and cola rather than the high-toned red fruit that leads the other cuvées. Bigger than anything else he makes from the grape. And it still doesn't shout.

If you think California Pinot has to pick between power and precision — open this one and report back.

100% Pinot Noir, every berry from Fiddlestix. Dark for the grape — black cherry and ripe blueberry up front, then graphite, cola, and crushed violet underneath. The texture is the giveaway: rich, plush, almost cake-like across the middle, without ever tipping into sweetness. Gentle acids keep it moving. Fine tannins and an inky mineral undertow carry a long, layered finish. Give it an hour of air before dinner.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Once again, I found the 2023 Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard to be a centerpiece of the Tyler portfolio, offering up a dramatically richer and more saturated frame than its counterparts in the lineup, while sacrificing no clarity or complexity. The nose is strikingly dark, floral and pure, with clear-cut graphite and cola notes that are often common to larger-scale Pinot Noirs yet rendered here with poise and precision. On the palate, it packs the most substantial punch of the roster, oozing with a rich, cake-like texture while refraining from overt decadence. The finish is deep, long and layered, with a lumbering richness that sets it apart from the more high-toned and soaring counterparts in the lineup." ~96 Wine Advocate

"Plush and juicy, the 2023 Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard is a flashier, more forward wine with great suppleness and a core of intensely ripe blueberry fruit. A bold, confident wine, the Fiddlestix saturates the palate with inky mineral tones and gentle acids. Nicely done." ~93 Vinous Media
