About The Wine

Vasse Felix planted the first vines in Margaret River in 1967 — the region's founding estate. Dr Tom Cullity and the Hohnen brothers experimented in a rammed earth shed for six years before releasing their first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1971. That pioneering legacy still runs through every bottle.

Filius is the estate's everyday Cabernet, but there's nothing ordinary about it. Grown further from the ocean with a more continental feel, the 2023 was fermented as 100% whole berries with wild yeasts and spent 10–12 months in French oak. The result is Margaret River Cabernet at its most approachable — bright, fruit-forward, blended with Malbec for structure — but still carrying the regional hallmarks that made this place famous.

The glass delivers abundant blackcurrant, black plum, graphite, and violet, layered with bay leaf, mocha, and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with creamy texture, gently dusty tannins, and bright acidity that keeps everything balanced and fresh. Wine Spectator called out the dense mix of kirsch, cassis, and blackberry, the tobacco and cardamom accents, the firming tannins. It's serious enough to cellar through 2032, but delicious enough to pull the cork tonight.

This is the depth and regional purity Napa drinkers pay $50+ for, from a 91-point wine at $26. The kind of bottle that makes you stop buying supermarket Cabernet.

95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot.

Deep ruby with a purple tinge.

The nose is bright blood plum and blackcurrant, layered with graphite, dried winter herbs — bay and sage — violets, and spicy charcuterie. Subtle mushroom and Mexican chocolate underneath add the complexity.

The palate opens soft and fresh with bright fruit, then a dusty tannin build takes over and finishes powdery and dry. Elegant, juicy acidity carries fresh blackcurrant through, with a hint of native potpourri lingering over a solid tannin base.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Abundant black-fruit aromas supported by spices, cedar, crushed stones and violets. The medium-bodied palate has a creamy texture and finely tuned, generous tannins with so much purity of fruit. Grown further away from the ocean with a more continental feel. Delicious and early-drinking yet serious. Drink or hold. Screw cap." ~94 James Suckling

"A generous mix of kirsch, cassis and blackberry flavors is dense and dark, accented by notes of palo santo, tobacco and cardamom. The tannins are dense, and a grace note of malty Assam black tea lingers on the finish, with plenty of harmony and firming tannins. Drink now through 2032." ~91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding winery, established in 1967 by Dr. Tom Cullity as the region’s first commercial vineyard. Today, it remains one of Western Australia’s most respected producers, known especially for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from the region’s maritime climate and gravelly soils. Under the Horgan family, Vasse Felix has built a reputation for combining Margaret River’s natural precision with a distinctly modern approach to winemaking, with winemaker Virginia Willcock leading the estate since 2006. The result is a benchmark expression of Margaret River: structured, age-worthy wines with remarkable purity, balance, and a strong sense of place.
