About The Wine

Vasse Felix founded Margaret River in 1967 — the region's first serious vineyard, the estate that proved Western Australia could make profound Chardonnay. Dr. Thomas Brendan Cullity planted the original blocks in Wilyabrup; the Holmes a Court family have guided the winery since 1987, quietly building one of Australia's most respected portfolios.

The Premier Chardonnay is the estate's single-vineyard flagship, drawn from the oldest blocks of the Home Vineyard — the same fruit that helped define Margaret River's identity. Margaret River sits between two oceans, bathed in maritime winds that slow ripening and preserve natural acidity, giving its Chardonnay the mineral spine and salinity that drew comparisons to Burgundy from the start.

2023 was a near-perfect vintage — the kind of season that lets a great site express itself without compromise. High natural acidity met full malolactic fermentation, a rare balance that yields both tension and depth. The bouquet is still developing — lemon blossom, lime, a whisper of brioche — but the palate already shows the profound length and intensity that earned Ryan Montgomery's 100-point score and Wine Enthusiast's 94.

This is Margaret River Chardonnay at its most serious: mineral-driven, precise, built for the cellar but already compelling in the glass. The kind of wine that reminds you why Vasse Felix planted the first vines fifty-seven years ago.

Lemon blossom, lime, and ginger open a still-developing bouquet with hints of brioche and pine needles. The palate combines mineral salinity with Burgundian finesse — pear, white fruit, and buttery apple carried by polished acidity and remarkable length.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Excellent value for the stellar quality, this gem of wine opens with opulent aromas of crushed oyster shells, nuts, cantaloupe and lemon, with a flaky pastry crust note at the back. There's a fabulous lift of mouth-watering acidity with textural interest and grilled citrus and melon flavors lingering long after you've swallowed. Superbly balanced and food friendly." ~94 Wine Enthusiast

"The nose is deeply complex and inviting, with aromas of lemon confit, quince, lime curd and grapefruit rind. The palate is medium-bodied with focused acidity and a generous mouthfeel, giving notes of fresh pineapple, white chocolate nougat, gun smoke and orange blossoms. A good balance of power and freshness. Drink or hold. Screw cap." ~94 James Suckling

"The 2023 Vasse Felix Chardonnay is a confident release, offering generous fruit and texture while retaining the sophisticated house style. Energetic and pristine aromas of nectarine and florals open on the nose, with fresh nutty elements emerging as the wine breathes. Oak is prominent but in perfect unison with the powerful fruit. The palate shows excellent fruit density, punctuated by chalky acidity and a strong saline freshness that holds true over a long, fine finish." ~93 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding winery, established in 1967 by Dr. Tom Cullity as the region’s first commercial vineyard. Today, it remains one of Western Australia’s most respected producers, known especially for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from the region’s maritime climate and gravelly soils. Under the Horgan family, Vasse Felix has built a reputation for combining Margaret River’s natural precision with a distinctly modern approach to winemaking, with winemaker Virginia Willcock leading the estate since 2006. The result is a benchmark expression of Margaret River: structured, age-worthy wines with remarkable purity, balance, and a strong sense of place.
