About The Wine

Villa Maria Estate was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich on a five-hectare plot leased from his parents in Auckland — a scrappy beginning that became one of New Zealand's most decorated producers. Over six decades, the house earned its reputation on wines that punch dramatically above their price point, and this Taylor's Pass Sauvignon Blanc is the evidence in your glass.

Marlborough is where New Zealand invented its modern wine identity — bright, chilly winters followed by long, dry summers, with wind-cooled valleys between shifting mountains and crashing seas.

The region's deep, free-draining soils were carved by an extensive glacial braided river system, giving vines the stress and drainage they need to concentrate flavor. Taylor's Pass is grown sustainably across these sub-regions, pulling together the best of Marlborough's character at a price that defies the math.

The wine opens with lifted aromatics of fresh garden peas and blackcurrants mingled with coriander — classic Marlborough in high definition.

The palate delivers concentrated flavors of jalapeno and lemongrass, finishing with a punchy burst of lime zest and a hint of gunflint.

There's a chalky texture reminiscent of wet river stones, the kind of minerality you expect from wines twice the price.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A lovely bouquet of purity and freshness, the Taylor’s Pass satin frame to the fruit and minerality is clear and precise. Aromas of fresh grapefruit and blackcurrant leaf, a nettle and pineapple quality, then peach and gooseberry. Crisp and dry on the palate with a salivating saline mouthfeel, plenty of acidity and core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet and stand up to the intensity of structure and youth. Well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2029. ~93 Cameron Douglas

This is citrusy and tropical, showing Asian pears, lemons, passion fruit and lychees on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with lively, zesty acidity. Tangy and bright. Sustainable. Drink now. Screw cap.~92 James Suckling

Heady aromas of honeyed lime, jasmine, passion fruit, pineapple and grass flow to a palate that's slippery in texture with nice fruit concentration and the slightest bit of residual sugar to temper the acidity. A strong bottling of this classic style. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
