About The Wine

Philippe Melka and Matt Sands don't chase fruit — they chase the vineyards that matter. Melka, the 100-point Bordeaux-trained architect behind some of Napa's most celebrated wines, started at Château Haut-Brion. Sands honed his craft at Screaming Eagle and a string of New Zealand's most exacting estates. Together, they source from the highest-caliber sites in Northern California, and Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River Valley is one of them.

Kent Ritchie has farmed this ground for decades, and it shows in the fruit. The soil is unique, the climate shaped by fog that rolls in cool and lifts late. The result is Chardonnay with natural minerality, balanced acidity, and the kind of structure that keeps the wine lively instead of flabby. This is Russian River Chardonnay with a spine.

Melka and Sands fermented this in neutral oak, letting the vineyard speak without burying it in butter and toast. Michael Apstein scored it 92 points, calling it "glossy, intense, cream-laden" with bright acidity and seductive texture. On the nose: ripe golden apple, white peach, Meyer lemon, toasted hazelnuts, a wisp of vanilla. The palate delivers orchard fruit and citrus zest backed by subtle creaminess, then unfolds into honeyed pear, crème brûlée, and a touch of flint. The finish is long and vibrant.

This is the kind of Chardonnay that reminds you why Russian River became Russian River — before the region's name turned into shorthand for overproduction. Pull the cork tonight or give it a year in the cellar. Either way, you're drinking fruit from one of Sonoma's most respected sites, made by two winemakers who don't cut corners.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A glossy, intense, cream-laden Chardonnay flows from this impressive packaging. Bright acidity amplifies its seductive texture. This well-made wine won't be for everyone, but those who embrace lush ripe Chardonnay with oomph with love its buttery richness. ~92 Michael Apstein
