About The Wine

If you enjoy crisp whites like Sauvignon Blanc from Napa or New Zealand Pinot Grigio, this will fit naturally into your rotation. This wine is made from 100% Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s most important white grape, known for its clarity, energy, and easy pairing ability. Grüner Veltliner has long been a favorite among sommeliers because it offers substance without heaviness and elegance without fuss, which makes it a great choice for anyone who appreciates clean, refreshing white wines.

Few estates bring more credibility to this grape than Kracher. The family became internationally famous through Alois Kracher Senior, the winemaker who put Austrian sweet wines on the global stage. He was the first Austrian to receive a 100-point score from Robert Parker, earned Winemaker of the Year six times, and saw his wines poured in over 400 New York restaurants. Critics still consider Kracher one of the world’s top producers of sweet wines, with regular 99- and 100-point ratings and a track record that spans decades.

Today the estate is led by his grandson, Gerhard Kracher, who brings a broader, more international perspective to the cellar. His experience in France and California adds a modern edge to the family’s traditional approach, and that combination of discipline and fresh thinking shapes wines like this Grüner Veltliner. The vineyards near Lake Neusiedl benefit from warm days, cool nights, and steady winds, creating the kind of balance and lift that define the best examples of the grape.

If you’re new to Austrian wine, this bottle is an easy and reliable place to start. It works for simple weeknight meals, relaxed gatherings, and anyone who wants a white wine with character and versatility. And because Grüner Veltliner still offers exceptional value compared to many well-known regions, this bottle is a smart way to stock the cellar or explore something new with confidence.

What the Critics Said

From 20- to 25-year-old vines, vinified in stainless steel and aged on the fine lees for six months, the 2023 Grüner Veltliner trocken opens with an intense, saline, fresh and floral nose with fine phenolics and lemon rind; from a bigger glass, the wine also displays chamomile, finely nutty and yeasty notes. Full-bodied, intense and creamy on the palate, with nutty flavors and a lot of refreshing power, this is a very intense and textural, rather baroque but elegant and persistently structured, complex and saline Veltliner that needs a big glass, lots of time and a rich dish. In terms of its rich texture and fruit intensity, the wine even shows some Traminer features. It is very aromatic on the long and intense yet also refreshing mineral finish. This is a pretty unique style of Veltliner whose berries have a thicker skin due to plenty of sunshine hours and the drought of the vintage. However, the wine isn't bitter but rich. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2024. ~92 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Don’t expect a typical Austrian gruner when you open this bottle. You could be delighted by this very distinctive expression of the grape. The nose shows wildflower aromas. Then comes the juicy, medium-bodied palate, with notes of green pears and greengage plums plus a lot of apple freshness. Drink now. Screw cap. ~91 James Suckling

~90 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
