Take 90 seconds to uncover what makes this estate and this wine truly unforgettable.
The wine-growing tradition of the Dr. Hugo Thanisch family can be traced back more than 350 years. In 1636, the name was mentioned for the first time in the registers of Bernkastell-Kues. The quality of the family’s wines soon extended their excellent reputation far beyond the Mosel valley.
At the end of the 18th Century, the Thanisch’s acquired the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard, a very steep site with a deep devon slate structure, situated behind and overlooking the rooftops of the quaint old town of Bernkastel. The Doctor's name originates in a legend about Prince Boemond II of Trier who fell sick and then was cured by a wine from this vineyard. The medicinal powers of fine wines are today being rediscovered! Without a doubt, the Doctor Vineyard is the most valuable and famous German site.
The Thanisch estate includes over 30 acres of vineyards located on the best sites of “the best place for Riesling in the world” a.k.a Mosel Valley. Mosel is, in Wine Spectator’s words “one of the most striking wine regions on Earth.”
This wine comes from Badstube, the Bernkasteler Badstube comprises six of the best vineyard sites in Bernkastel. The growing site’s soil features a fine slate that stores water extremely well. Very lively and fresh Rieslings grow here with racy and stable acidity and extraordinary potential for development.

Critical Reviews
It’s hard to get past the kaleidoscopic nose of apricots, mandarin oranges and jasmine, but when you do, this is a very succulent Mosel Riesling GG. The power and concentration are wonderfully underplayed, but they make this very compelling. Such a long, succulent finish, but it’s dry and extremely slatey. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. ~96 James Suckling
The 2023 Riesling Bernkasteler Graben Grosses Gewächs hails from vines between 60 and 90 years old that are lower down on the slope, all on single stakes, some ungrafted. Half of the volume is fermented in Fuder, half in stainless steel. A gorgeous floral overtone of white summer blossom precedes the vivid green-yellow apple juiciness on the nose. The palate is superbly light, almost gushing with lemony, vivid fruit that becomes increasingly citric with time. The finish tapers into a lovely touch of pithiness with a grapefruit verve.
