About The Wine

Sebastián Zuccardi built his winery out of stones he dug out of his own vineyard. That tells you how seriously this family takes place.

The Zuccardis have farmed Mendoza since 1963. Sebastián's grandfather planted the first vines in Maipú, mostly to prove out an irrigation system he'd invented. Three generations later, Sebastián moved the serious work up into the Uco Valley. Then he started asking a question most of Argentina wasn't asking: what does Malbec taste like when you stop dressing it up?

Concreto is his answer, and he's been making it since 2014. Whole clusters. Native yeasts. Fermented and aged in raw concrete vats with no epoxy lining. No barrels, no new oak, nothing standing between the fruit and your glass.

The grapes come off the stoniest, chalkiest parcels he farms, at 3,608 feet. Cold Andean nights hold the acid together while the altitude sun does the ripening. What lands in the bottle is dark and concentrated but never sweet — black fruit, violets, a herbal snap, and a chalky grip on the finish that feels like the soil talking.

Most Malbec at this price is built to be easy. This one is built to be honest. Hand it to someone who thinks they already know what Argentine Malbec tastes like.

100% Malbec.

Deep purple in the glass, nearly opaque at the core. The nose opens on black plum, blackberry and blueberry, then violets, with a green-herb lift behind them — dried mountain sage, not anything vegetal.

The palate is medium-full and dense, bone dry, with firm tannins that grip instead of coat. Acidity runs high and keeps the fruit taut rather than jammy.

The finish is where the concrete shows itself: long, mineral, distinctly chalky, with a saline edge that pulls you back for another sip.

Decant it an hour if you're drinking it tonight. It has the acid and tannin to hold for years if you're not.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Fermented 100% whole-cluster, then fermented and aged one year in concrete, the 2023 Malbec Concreto was the first wine made in the modern-day Zuccardi winery, a wine that changed winemaker Sebastian Zuccardi's philosophy of winemaking. Forgoing oak and sweet fruit, he seeks first and foremost to express freshness in his wines, finding a strong sense of place through stony minerality and a touch of wild herb. Thick and richly concentrated, it is a testament to his dedication to concrete fermentation and aging, the 100% varietal wine fermenting entirely in concrete amphorae before spending 11 months in 100% concrete tank. The wine is duly textured, complex, and lively, retaining freshness amidst a plush structure with plenty of length. Drink now through 2038. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

Such a naked, floral malbec. Stripped down, with fresh blackberries, blueberries, violets, stone, iodine and graphite. Full-bodied and tight with fresh, succulent fruit in a deep set. Intense, flavorful and very composed. Tannins are firm, tight and gritty. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Suckling

Concreto was first made in 2014, the first made at the Piedra Infinita winery in Altamira, and also the first to show Zuccardi's intention to make highly ambitious wines without aging them in barrels. From the beginning, it has marked a style of ripe red fruits, the sensation of voluptuousness associated with malbec, while leaving aside that sweetness that can often be cloying. To get to know the new face of Andean malbecs, this is ideal. ~94 Descorchados

~94 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

An elegant, vibrant and youthful package built around violet, pineapple guava and fresh berry aromas that join the palate. Cherry, orange and slate details swell around the fresh acidity and drive the finish, with cocoa bean and orange peel details and caressing tannins. Drink now through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

This is a Uco Valley Malbec that offers the pure fruit character of the variety and the freshness of high-altitude vineyards in the Paraje Altamira and Gualtallary regions. Notes of crushed pebbles and dark cherries complement its floral bouquet. It has delicate tannins and black fruit flavors, with a subtle note of cassis. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

The 2023 Malbec Concreto is sourced from Paraje Altamira and Gualtallary. True to its name—this purple-hued wine is bottled right after a winter in concrete vats, with no oak aging. It reveals aromas of violet and blueberry, with a touch of cherry in its deeper layers. The palate is compact and juicy, with underlying tension and a lingering chalky texture. Born in a warm vintage, the 2023 is rich yet balanced, offering a well-calibrated sip that highlights the fruit. ~93 Vinous Media
