About The Wine

Most Napa cult wines you never actually get to buy.

This is the exception. Heidi Barrett made the first Screaming Eagles and Dalla Valle's Maya. Between those two labels, Robert Parker handed her four perfect 100-point scores.

A six-liter bottle of her 1992 Screaming Eagle sold for $500,000 at the 2000 Napa Valley Wine Auction. In 2002 she and longtime friend John Schwartz started Amuse Bouche: a Pomerol-style Merlot people could actually find.

Vin Perdu is its second label. The name means "lost wine." The joke, per the winery, is that it sells out and gets lost.

The blend is rebuilt every vintage, and that is the whole idea. The 2024 is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petite Sirah, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Syrah, all from the family's own Napa Valley vineyards.

Close to 700 cases. Two years ago it was Merlot-led. Last year it was three-quarters Cabernet. This year Cabernet and Merlot split the work. The Franc adds lift; the Petite Sirah and Syrah bring color and grip. She builds it from what the year gave her, not from a recipe.

Every Vin Perdu wears a lenticular flip label. Tilt the 2024 and a lost van appears, with Heidi at the door holding out a glass. That is her sense of humor.

The wine underneath it is serious: a structured, full-bodied Napa red with the bones to hold for years. Decant it an hour and pour it next to a ribeye tonight.

This is how you get Heidi Barrett's name in your glass without a mailing list. Do not let it get lost.

40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petite Sirah, 3% Petit Verdot, and 3% Syrah.

Expect black cherry and cassis from the Cabernet, plum and a rounder mid-palate from the Merlot, and a cedar, tobacco and dried-herb edge from the Franc.

The Petite Sirah and Syrah deepen the color and add a peppery, blue-fruit note. Full-bodied, firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savory finish. Decant an hour now, or hold five to eight years.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Vin Perdu is bright and punchy. Effusive in the glass, the 2023 offers up an exciting mix of cool blue-toned fruit, lavender, spice and leather. There's terrific depth here. This is one of the best vintages of the Vin Perdu I can remember tasting. ~95 Vinous (v.2023)

A good, well-structured Bordeaux-style blend that is packed with dark-fruit flavors and savory, cedary accents. Tobacco leaf, black cherries, dark chocolate and bay leaf on the palate, backed by firm, shaping tannins. Based largely on cabernet sauvignon, with syrah, merlot and petit verdot blended in. Drink now or hold." ~95 James Suckling (v.2023)

The 2023 Vin Perdu is composed of 74.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16.1% Syrah, 65% Merlot, and 33% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes tearing out of the glass with gregarious notes of warm cassis, blackberry preserves, and mint tea, plus suggestions of mossy tree bark and tapenade. The full.bodied palate is intense and vibrant with bags of fresh black-berry layers and a fine-grained texture, finishing long with great tension. ~95 Lisa Perrotti-Brown M.W., The Wine Palate (v.2023)

Amuse Bouche's 2023 Red Wine Vin Perdu gives consumers a chance to try a wine from superstar winemaker Heidi Barrett for less than $100. This blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Syrah, 7% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot doesn't disappoint, delivering loads of ripe cherries buoyed on a full-bodied palate that's supple and suave in feel. Yes, it might show a touch of warmth, but overall, it's pleasing, approachable and would make a great steakhouse or burger wine. ~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (v.2023)
