About The Wine

The Fouassier family has been making wine in Sancerre since 1742 — ten generations of growers working the same limestone slopes.

Benoit and Paul Fouassier, cousins who run the estate today, farm 60 hectares organically and biodynamically, and they pioneered single-vineyard bottlings in the early 1980s when most producers were still blending everything together. This is old-family rigor applied to one of the Loire's greatest white-wine villages.

La Garenne comes from 2.6 hectares in the heart of Sancerre, on chalky limestone soils that give the grape its mineral backbone.

The vines average 35 years old — old enough to send roots deep and pull complexity from the bedrock. Only 18,000 bottles are made.

The Fouassiers press the fruit gently, ferment spontaneously with native yeast, and age the wine for a year on its lees in stainless steel. No additives, no tricks — just ancestral methods guided by the lunar calendar.

Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre at this level delivers what no New World bottling can touch: the electric freshness of Loire fruit sharpened by limestone, the kind of wine that makes you sit up and pay attention. This one shows golden-green in the glass, with gooseberries, lemon, elderflower, and a hint of passion fruit. The palate is lively and juicy, balanced between finesse and vivacity — the terroir speaking clearly through the fruit.

This is the wine to reach for when you want Sancerre that tastes like the place, made by people who've been doing it longer than almost anyone else in the village.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is a beautiful Sancerre. Gently-bruised white peach, Pink Lady apple and lemon-zested bread aromas open on the nose. The creamy palate adds a touch of saline to orchard fruit that enlivens the finish. ~ 92 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Fouassier

Domaine Fouassier is one of the oldest family-owned estates in Sancerre, with a winemaking history that dates back to the 18th century. Now led by the tenth generation of the Fouassier family, the estate is a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, farming its vineyards with a deep respect for nature and terroir.

Their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are crafted from Sancerre's diverse limestone, flint, and clay soils, resulting in wines that are vibrant, mineral-driven, and beautifully expressive of the Loire Valley.
