About The Wine

Peter Michael Winery sits at the top of California Chardonnay — a place reserved for the handful of producers who've proven it vintage after vintage. La Carriere is their now-legendary vineyard, planted at the highest elevations of Knights Valley where ocean influence meets volcanic soils that erupted 3.4 million years ago during the Sonoma Volcanics event. The lowest-yielding Chardonnay vines on the property, named for the quarry and defined by striking mid-palate resonance, stony minerality, and briny texture.

Robert Fiore, winemaker since 2020, is an earth scientist who studied archaeology and geophysics before turning to wine. The vertical tasting of La Carriere that sold him on the role tells you everything: this is the wine that makes believers. 100% naturally fermented with native yeast, 100% barrel-fermented in French oak from select artisan coopers, aged sur lies for twelve months with weekly batonnage — the kind of winemaking that doesn't rush.

The 2024 is tropical and perfumed — wisteria, jasmine, passionfruit, lemon-lime meringue — pouring a bright, pale yellow. Full-bodied but light on its feet, with raw honey, melon, and that pleasing salty lift on the close. Jeb Dunnuck calls it "very pretty" and gives it a decade of life. Wine Advocate landed at 94-96 points, citing "a satiny texture, a dynamic interplay of ripe, expressive fruit with focused, driving acidity." Vinous found "striking mid-palate resonance." 95 Jeb Dunnuck. 94 Wine Advocate. 93 Vinous.

This is Knights Valley Chardonnay from the vines that wrote the playbook. We've tasted thousands. This is one of the ones worth your money.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

True to its name, the Chardonnay La Carrière is full of stony, briny nuances. Citrus peel, jasmine, oyster shell and tangerine peel are all wonderfully vivid in the glass. Airy and translucent, the Carrière is all about crystalline transparency. I especially admire its energy, tension and poise. Other wines in this range offer more power and richness, but La Carrière is my personal favorite because of its intense minerality and energy.  ~97 Vinous Media

Pouring a bright, pale yellow, hazy color the 2024 Chardonnay La Carrière is tropical and perfumed with highly floral wisteria and jasmine, as well as notes of passionfruit and lemon-lime meringue. Named after the quarry, it’s full-bodied but light on its feet, offering notes of raw honey, melon, and a pleasing salty lift on the close. As it opens, more stony earth starts to emerge through the floral profile. It’s very pretty and can drink well now or over the coming 10 years. Drink 2026-2036.  ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

I tasted the 2024 Chardonnay La Carrière from tank shortly before it was due to be bottled. It has alluring, layered aromas of nectarine, mango, panna cotta, lime peel and seamlessly integrated, spicy oak. The full-bodied palate has a satiny texture, a dynamic interplay of ripe, expressive fruit with focused, driving acidity and a very long finish. 2,944 cases are expected to be released in April 2026. Barrel Sample: 94-96 ~96 Wine Advocate

There’s plenty of focus and drive to this spectacular white, with a backbone of crushed rock and sea salt minerality. Fragrant white flowers including jasmine and alyssum add a perfumed thread, and the core notes of crunchy star fruit, pear and lemon curd are equally juicy and precise. Drink now through 2040. ~94 Wine Spectator
