Quite rich, intense and spicy for a Bolgheri rosso, with embers, bark, licorice and ash. Supple and ripe, offering velvety tannins, medium body, crisp acidity and a round finish with savory, floral depth. ~95 James Suckling
A blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Sangiovese, and the remainder Petit Verdot, the 2024 Bolgheri Rosso pours a youthful ruby/purple hue and is highly aromatic, with crushed wildflowers, black raspberry, cherry, orange, and refined herbal spice. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s elegant and light on its feet, with fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a linear, graceful profile with mineral undertones. It combines freshness with depth and finishes with excellent precision and length. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER
Podere Grattamacco Bolgheri
Podere Grattamacco is Bolgheri's second-oldest estate, founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, who came from Lombardy, making it second only to Sassicaia among the region's original Super Tuscan pioneers — older even than Ornellaia and Gaja's Ca'Marcanda. In 1994, under the estate's centuries-old oak tree, Piermario Meletti Cavallari gathered with Michele Satta, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, and Piero and Lodovico Antinori for a historic photo marking the birth of the Bolgheri denomination, and Grattamacco became the first winery to bottle a Bolgheri Rosso that same year — as well as the first to plant Vermentino and the first to put "Bolgheri" on its top wine's label rather than lean on the flashier "Super Tuscan" branding. In 2002 the estate was acquired by Claudio Tipa, owner of Collemassari, who planted new vineyards, including one at 200 meters above sea level in the Casa Vecchia area and another along the Via Bolgherese. What sets Grattamacco apart from its Cabernet- and Merlot-focused neighbors is its signature use of Sangiovese — it was the first winery in Bolgheri to use Sangiovese, thanks to its high altitude despite proximity to the coast, blending 15% into its flagship Bolgheri Superiore alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for added quality and elegance. The estate today stretches across 80 hectares, with 34 hectares under vine and 5 planted to olive groves, surrounded by over 1,600 hectares of forest.
