About The Wine

Tenuta San Guido is the house behind Sassicaia, the Cabernet that rewrote the rules for Tuscan wine and earned its own DOC in 1994—the only single-estate wine in Italy to hold that distinction. Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon in Bolgheri in 1944, and for decades Sassicaia remained a family secret. Guidalberto arrived in 2000 after more than twenty years of quiet experimentation, named for an ancestor and built to deliver the estate's signature depth at a more accessible threshold.

The 2024 vintage shows the estate's command of Tuscan Cabernet: 15 months in French oak, bright ruby in the glass, expressive and tightly wound. Aromas of menthol, eucalyptus, graphite, and redcurrant open into notes of rosemary, thyme, cranberry, orange peel, and clove spice. The structure is classic Bolgheri—fruity, spicy, balanced, currently a little closed but built for the cellar.

James Suckling scored it 96 points. The previous vintage earned 95 points for its distinctly Tuscan profile: currants, cedar, mahogany, bark, and orange peel. This is Cabernet from the place that proved it could speak Italian—old-world restraint, new-world fruit, none of the supermarket softness.

We taste 5,000 wines a year. We buy 4%. Guidalberto made the cut because it delivers Sassicaia's pedigree without the Sassicaia price. Six bottles, one case, ready to cellar or open tonight with an hour in the decanter.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of currants, cedar, mahogany, bark and orange peel say this is distinctly Tuscan. It’s medium-bodied with softness and freshness that bring you back for more. Very soft yet fine tannins. Juicy and subtle. So delicious now. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Almost equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Guidalberto remains impressive value for the quality on offer, but buyers should be aware that 2024 is a lighter offering with less density of fruit than in previous years. But those who embrace the vintage will be rewarded with a juicy dark berry core with velvety tannins and flecks of cherry and pomegranate. Lifted herbal and floral aromatics make this so inviting. Breezy, easy and fun. ~93 Decanter
