Pauillac isn't just a postcode — it's the epicenter of Bordeaux power, home to three First Growths and more pedigree per hectare than anywhere else on the Left Bank. Chateau Clerc-Milon sits in that rarified air, a Fifth Growth under Rothschild stewardship since 1970, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild rescued it from obscurity and turned a handful of neglected vines into one of the appellation's most intriguing estates.

The property's story reads like a Bordeaux parable: originally part of Jean-Baptiste Clerc's holdings in the 1800s, it was divided, sold, and nearly forgotten by the mid-20th century. The Rothschilds saw what others missed — prime Pauillac dirt flanking Mouton and Lafite — and rebuilt it from the ground up. Today, Caroline Artaud, vineyard manager Richard Martin, and cellar master Frederic Faure run the estate with the same precision that guides Mouton Rothschild, benefiting from shared expertise across the Rothschild portfolio.

2025 is a vintage of contrasts. Lower alcohols — mostly 13-14% — and higher acidity than recent years, with pH levels hovering around 3.6 to 3.7. More rain than 2022, cooler weather at the close, and a late-August downpour that revived the vines. It's a classical, less showy year, the kind that rewards patience and reveals structure over power.

The Clerc-Milon blend typically leans on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc filling out the frame. Expect cool cassis, subtle cedar, graphite, and rose petal — classic Pauillac markers — with chalky tannins and a mineral spine that speaks to the gravelly soils. It's polished, vertical, built to cellar but approachable young for those who can't wait.

This is the Pauillac that doesn't scream. It's the estate serious collectors track, the bottle smart buyers grab before the scores land and the price adjusts. Rothschild pedigree, Fifth Growth poise, and a vintage that plays the long game.

Cool cassis, blackberries, subtle cedarwood, and graphite on the nose, with rose petal and red cherry accents. The palate is focused and vertical — polished tannins, crunchy dark fruit, a saline minerality like licking stone, layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, and hints of espresso. Elegant, balanced, and built for the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A juicy and structured Clerc that is very typical with a firmness and brightness. It's medium-bodied with a solid center palate and a linear and racy finish. Just a hint of flint in the end. Vivid and pretty. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 8% cabernet franc, 1% carmenere and 1% petit verdot. ~ 94-95 James Suckling

The 2025 Clerc Milon has turned out beautifully, offering up notes of dark berries, petals and orange zest, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with lively acids and a chalky finish, it's a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and the rest Carmenère and Petit Verdot. ~ 93-95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A balanced, graceful Pauillac, the 2025 Château Clerc Milon is based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Carménère and Petit Verdot, still resting in barrel. Cassis and black cherries, graphite, and a crushed stone-like minerality all define the nose. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with a pretty, pure, almost understated profile that builds nicely with time in the glass. It's a beautiful Pauillac in the making, and I'd certainly be happy with bottles in the cellar. ~ 92-94 Jeb Dunnuck
