About The Wine

We've been on this hunt for a long time. After losing our previous "core" Bandol Rosé producer, we spent years searching for a replacement that could meet a specific set of conditions: sustainable farming, a finessed and age-worthy style in the tradition of Tempier and Terrebrune, and a price point that didn't require an apology. Tempier is a benchmark, but today's Tempier pricing — routinely pushing near $100 at retail — has made it increasingly difficult to recommend without hesitation.

We found our answer at Wine Paris, through an introduction to Philippe Barthe of Château de Font Vive. The moment he described the location of his vineyards, the search was over. His vines don't just draw inspiration from Tempier and Terrebrune — they share a border with them.

Philippe's 2025 is everything this appellation promises at its best: delicate, precise, and driven by the kind of stony, saline minerality that makes Bandol Rosé unlike anything else in Provence.

This is a wine for serious rosé drinkers — and for anyone who's ever wondered if there's a better-value alternative to the names that dominate the US market. There is. You're looking at it.

Pale salmon-pink in the glass with a luminous clarity. The nose is fresh and inviting — raspberry, citrus rind, and spring flowers weave together with a savory thread of garrigue.

On the palate, the wine is dry and poised, with Mourvèdre lending structure and that characteristic crunchy, stony minerality that defines Bandol at its finest. The finish is long, clean, and refreshing, with just enough tension to signal genuine aging potential.

THE PRODUCER

Chateau de Font Vive

Château de Font Vive was founded in 1991 by Philippe Barthe on a small parcel of 3.8 hectares in the commune of Évenos — the place-name "Font Vive" refers to a lieu-dit there where he planted his first vines, cultivated exclusively for rosé.

The domaine has expanded over the years to include red and white wines, with vines now spanning several of Bandol's eight communes across south-southwest-facing terraced hillsides of clay-limestone soils. Philippe farms traditionally and sustainably — Mourvèdre trained in the classic gobelet style, Grenache and Cinsault on wire — and has never invested in a website, social media, or promotional materials of any kind.

What the estate does have is a quiet reputation built over three decades, a presence on the menus of Paris's best brasseries, and vineyards that share a boundary fence with both Domaine Tempier and Domaine de Terrebrune.
