About The Wine

Founded 1811. Still in family hands.

In 1811, a 24-year-old named Charles Gabriel de Cazanove — born into a long line of master glassmakers — founded his own Champagne house in Avize, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Within a generation the house was pouring for presidents of the Third Republic. By 1902, King Edward VII was importing Charles de Cazanove under his own personal label.

Two centuries later, the house sits in Reims under the Rapeneau family — one of the last significant Champagne producers with no outside shareholders. No luxury conglomerate, no investment group, no holdings outside the region. Christophe Rapeneau has served as chef de cave since 1983, more than forty years shaping a single, consistent house style, and the family farms roughly 800 hectares of vineyard, a scale almost no house can match.

That style starts with fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed, the gentlest method in Champagne, drawing clear juice from black grapes without color or tannin. Fermentation happens mostly in stainless steel to protect that fruit, though selected lots see time in oak where the wine calls for the breadth a barrel provides. Everything then rests in the traditional chalk cellars beneath the region — the family's crayères in Épernay were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.

Authentic wines from a noble terroir, made according to ancestral traditions yet open to what progress can offer. This is the Champagne you pour when you want the pedigree without the label tax.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This Champagne offers an array of flavor, including toasted brioche, Gala apple, lemon zest, graphite and ginger, with a touch of honey. Elegant, but with good intensity and a moderate, nut-tinged finish. Drink now through 2018. 2,000 cases imported.  ~92WS
