About The Wine

Chazalettes Vermouth di Torino Rosso "della Regina" comes from the heart of Piedmont, the northwestern Italian region that is the historic cradle of Vermouth di Torino. The house traces its recipe to Clemente Chazalettes, who cut his teeth as technical production head at Martini before striking out on his own in 1876 to found his own premiata fabbrica di vermouth in Turin. For nearly a century the name was shipped from Singapore to Veracruz to New York, one of the defining vermouth houses of its era, before production went quiet in the 1970s. The brand was revived in 2016 by a family determined to bottle the original formula exactly as written.

The wine earns its royal name honestly. Chazalettes vermouth was a favorite of the women of the House of Savoy, and Queen Margherita granted the house the right to display the Royal Coat of Arms on its labels and letterhead. This Rosso is built on a red-wine base and aromatized with the classic bittering spine of wormwood alongside Piedmontese savory, marjoram, and the more exotic musk mallow and coriander, following the authentic Clemente Chazalettes recipe rather than a modern reinterpretation.

The critical reception has been emphatic. Wine Enthusiast's Kara Newman awarded it 95 points and named it one of the publication's Top 100 Spirits of 2024, placing it in the "Superb" tier among hundreds of spirits tasted that year. The wine has also collected international hardware, including a Silver Medal (92 points) in the IWSC Alternative Drinks category in 2022 and a Gold Medal in the Spirits Selection of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Bottled at 16.5% ABV in 750ml, this is a serious, bittersweet Torino red that works equally as a chilled aperitivo over ice and as the backbone of stirred classics. It anchors a Vermouth & Soda with an orange twist, holds its own against Campari in a Torino-Milano, and adds Piedmontese depth to a Rob Roy.

Pours a bright garnet. Bold aromas of red fruit and dried herbs lead into a palate that opens with a burst of dried cherry, then turns to bracingly bitter grapefruit peel and pith, bitter orange rind, and dried herbs. Complex, elegant, and cleanly bitter on the finish. Best served over ice with a curl of citrus peel.
