About The Wine

Domaine Carneros isn't another California sparkling house — it's what happens when Champagne Taittinger stakes 138 acres in Carneros and builds its American dream. Founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, the estate was created to prove California could produce finesse-driven, terroir-expressive wine worthy of the Taittinger name. Founding winemaker Eileen Crane spent 33 years refining that vision before passing the torch to Remi Cohen in 2020.

The Cuvee de la Pompadour Brut Rose is the house's original rose — a blend built from estate Carneros fruit, methode traditionnelle, and the same exacting standards that earned the winery its reputation. Named after Madame de Pompadour, who famously declared Champagne the only wine that leaves a woman beautiful after drinking it, the wine delivers exactly that kind of elegance.

Carneros is fog-belt country — cool maritime air pushes in from the San Pablo Bay, slowing ripening and preserving the kind of tension and lift that makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sing. That same terroir gives this rose its structure and finesse.

The wine opens with pale copper-salmon color and aromas of summer strawberries, raspberries, rose petals, and biscuits. The palate is light-bodied with crisp strawberry and apple flavors, hints of peach, apricot, watermelon, and a touch of honey for a soft, delicate mouthfeel and a smooth, long finish. Despite the color, it's a true Brut — as dry as any other sparkling wine in the house.

Here's the part that matters: this is an estate rose from a house with Champagne DNA and a 94-point score from James Suckling. That's the kind of quality-per-dollar that makes grocery-store bubbles taste emotionally vacant.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is so pure and refined with a lovely tension and nerve, giving aromas of grapefruit, citrus blossom, pastry and orange peel. The palate is tight and focused with an underlying texture and power cut through with bright acidity and a finely beaded mousse. Nicely balanced and refreshing. A blend of 40% chardonnay and 9 g/L dosage. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Flavors of ginger, rose, pomegranate and citrus show on the palate, with racy acidity and a long, creamy finish. A classic blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this sparkling rosé is poised, refreshing and intriguing. Delicious. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

The NV Domaine Carneros ‘Cuvee de la Pompadour’ Rose Sparkling Wine is a wine made in small amounts, that combines 62% Pinot Noir with the remainder Chardonnay from their estate vineyard. It is made in homage to Madame de la Pompadour, the paramour of French King Louis XV. Given .9% dosage this opens with nutty and damp earthy nuances on the nose with tart pomegranate seed, orange peel, with bergamot accents. This is lifted and soft on the palate with a refined mousse and good sense of length. Drink 2026-2036. ~ 93 Owen Bargreen
