About The Wine

Australia makes tawny. Most people don't know that.

Buller has been doing it in Rutherglen since 1921. That's northeast Victoria, on a band of red sandy clay loam that runs east, west and south of the township. Hot days, cool nights, a long ripening window.

The fruit hangs until raisining starts on the vine, then gets fortified with high-quality pot-stilled brandy. That concentration is the whole engine. It's what lets a wine carry this much sugar without tasting like syrup.

Here's the part I actually like. Buller runs a modified solera. Younger wine gets layered into older wine, across oak vats and barrels from 125 liters up to 25,000.

This tawny spends seven to ten years in that system. Up to 8% evaporates every year, which concentrates it further. The young material keeps it lifted. The old material gives it weight and rancio.

The blend is Carina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Shiraz. Unapologetically Australian, borrowing a Portuguese idea and doing it their own way.

Pour it after dinner in a small glass. No ceremony required. It'll sit open on the counter for weeks and not hold it against you.

Carina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Shiraz, fortified with pot-stilled grape brandy and matured seven to ten years in oak.

Appearance: Medium garnet, amber at the rim.

Nose: Dried fruit and prune, candied raspberry and plum, roasted nuts, orange peel, a lift of peppery spice.

Palate: Full-bodied and openly sweet at 115 g/L residual sugar. Strawberry preserve and cherry up front, developed porty character underneath, hints of rancio from the barrel time.

Finish: Velvety and spice-flecked, spirit well integrated, and it lands clean rather than sticky.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Blend grenache, shiraz, mataro, muscat and tokay and you get a nutty walnut, soy nose with spice, smoke, dried cherries, butter and raisins. Round, full, fresh and elegant with good acidity and sweetness balance. Very nutty rancio, dried cherry, buttery, rain, walnut, tobacco and orange peel flavours with a coffee finish. Excellent balance, length and finesse. Fine effort, good value. ~93 Gismondi On Wine

This is a wonderful tawny with lavender, dried fruit, prune and orange peel. Full body, medium sweet and a flavorful finish. The Rutherglen character is here! ~ 92 James Suckling

These blends represent the newest bottled offerings from this Rutherglen producer, an area that produces spectacular fortifieds, especially the Muscats and Tokays (actually Muscadelle). Their freshness, good acidity, soaring aromatics, and unctuous flavors must be tasted to be believed. The real values are the less expensive cuvees generally produced from 5- to 6-year-old solera systems... The Victoria Tawny exhibits a medium garnet color in addition to sweet, unctuous strawberry and cherry fruit. It is a blend of four grapes, Carina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Shiraz. ~ 92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Buller Wines

Buller Wines has been making fortified wine in Rutherglen since 1921, on the red sandy clay loam that rings the township in northeast Victoria.

Long ripening, warm days, cool nights. It's one of the handful of Australian estates that never stopped taking stickies seriously, and the modified solera behind these wines has been fed continuously for generations.
