About The Wine

Vecchio Magazzino Doganale was established in 1871, in the same period as the Belle Époque. At this time, the "Amaro Importante Jefferson" was introduced, which was a natural amaro produced using ingredients that were carefully selected from all across the Calabrian region.

The bitter “Jefferson” was reborn thanks to Ivano Trombino, when he received a suitcase full of diaries, stories, and research carried out by his grandfather during his stay in Italy. Ivano was so shocked and moved by this diary that he decided to start his journey in Calabria with some friends. Over the years, the group of friends acquired the knowledge and practices to produce a special liqueur, linked to their personalities.

To make this amazing amaro, Vecchio Magazzino Doganale cultivates and selects botanical plants, based on bitter and sweet oranges from Calabria, rosemary from Montalto Uffugo, oregano from Palombara, and bergamot from Roccella Ionica. Additional spices and bitter herbs are independently infused including gentian, rhubarb, lemon, and vanilla.

This is really one of the best amaros in the world and is served in the finest hotels and restaurants in Italy and Europe. Its Mediterranean soul and complex taste make it the perfect replacement for Vermouth for the creation of classic and modern cocktails like Negroni, Manhattan, or Americano.

Given trademark limitations and its recent arrival in the US, this Amaro is labeled "Jefferson" in Italy and is called "Importante" in the US.

This is great to enjoy alone or over ice and it is the perfect digestive after dinner. Serve it with a twist of lemon or orange.

Keep this in the refrigerator to maintain freshness for 3-4 weeks after opening.

9 months of preparation and marinating time, 40 days of rest in the bottle.

Produced from grain, corn, and barley.

25% White Cane Sugar.

Tasting Notes: The nose reveals aromas of candied citrus fruits, aromatic herbs, cinchona, star anise, and cloves, followed by balsamic and iodized notes. Elegant and long, revealing a satisfying, full, and generous aftertaste.

A Calabrian amaro built on carefully selected botanicals, to a recipe dating from 1871.

Bittersweet and aromatic: orange peel, gentian, licorice, and mountain herbs over a warm, caramel-edged base. Round and balanced — a digestivo neat over ice, or the backbone of a cocktail.
