About the Wine

In the world of wine, Sangenís i Vaqué may be a well-kept secret, but it's a gem that shines with unparalleled quality. This family-owned winery, despite its small size, is the embodiment of passion and tradition.

If you're eager to savor the exquisite taste of a well-aged Priorat wine, your opportunity has arrived!

In 1978, Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué began planting vines on Pere's family-owned lands in Porrera, D.O. Priorat. These vineyards had been in Conxita's family since before 1700.

In 1979, Pere and Conxita started winemaking at the Plaza Catalunya cellar, once owned by Conxita's grandfather, Josep Simó, a wine enthusiast since 1886.

Over the years, Pere combined tradition with modern winemaking trends in this cellar. Today, their daughters, Maria and Núria Sangenís, share the responsibility of crafting these outstanding wines.

Their vineyards, within D.O.Ca. Priorat, is located on terraces and slopes with the famous "llicorella" slate soil. These challenging soils, paired with a dry climate, result in low yields and exceptional quality.

With 37 acres in production, Sangenís i Vaqué divides its vineyards into three parcels or "trossos." They are committed to organic farming and are soon to be certified as ecological producers.

Harvesting occurs at optimal ripeness, with grapes carefully selected. Only pristine, hand-selected grapes enter the cellar, where destemming is done gently to protect the berries. Fermentation takes place in ancient subterranean lagares or "cubs," now modernized with ceramic tiles.

Coranya, named after the vineyard, is where the best grapes are chosen for this exceptional wine – a blend of 50% Carinyena from the 40-year-old Coranya vineyard and 50% Garnatxa, also from Coranya.

2001 was an outstanding year for Priorat, both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker blessed this vintage with a 95-point review, with the last one saying that it delivered "Ripe, powerful wines are benchmarks for the region."

Aging: 12 months in oak barrels. 85% French and 15% American oak.

Tasting Notes

50% 40-year-old Cariñena, 50% 40-year-old Garnacha. This is a wine for people who love to taste history. If you love tertiary flavors of fully mature wine, we did the cellaring for you. Note that many of these bottles have corks that are crumbling, so you may need to push the cork in and use a coffee filter before serving. This is totally normal for a 23 year old cork and doesn't mean the wine is off. The flavors and aromas in this wine are tobacco leaf, dried fig, black tea, dried forest leaves, and leather. It's an incredible tasting experience if you love aged wines.

Reviews

Rusty and mature in color, with saucy aromas of tomato, baked plum, herbs, and wild brush, this straggling Garnacha-Carignan blend from an excellent year feels full, energetic, and loaded to the brim. Flavors of herbal plum, mocha, chocolate, and mixed spices finish healthy. Overall, this is showing very well after 15 years. Drink through 2024. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
