About The Wine

Screaming Eagle sits at the apex of Napa Valley — the estate Jean Phillips founded in 1986 that redefined American Cabernet. From its replanted Oakville vineyards on well-drained, rocky soils and sun-drenched west-facing slopes cooled by San Pablo Bay breezes, the winery has earned six 100-point scores from Robert Parker across the 1997, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016 vintages. It remains one of the most compelling estates in the valley, now owned by Stanley Kroenke and guided by winemaker Nic Gislason.

The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Oakville AVA, where only the finest clusters are hand-selected, gently crushed, and fermented in small oak barrels before aging 18 to 20 months in French oak. The 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc — a vintage Robert Parker called "sexy, upfront, and precociously styled," while James Suckling awarded 99 points and asked if it might be "the wine of the vintage."

In the glass, the 2011 opens with dense licorice, camphor, black currant jam, spearmint, cloves, and blackberries, layered with espresso, toasted oak, caramel, dark chocolate, cedar, and sweet tobacco. The palate is full-bodied with phenomenal detail — delicate yet intense, rich yet balanced, showing the early-drinking charm Parker noted alongside the finesse and energy Suckling praised. The tannins are firm but polished, the finish long and seductive.

This is a wine built to age gracefully for decades, its vibrant fruit evolving into tobacco, cedar, and leather as it matures. Pull the cork now to experience its immediate appeal, or cellar it through the 2030s and beyond — the 2011 rewards both paths.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Mindlblowing nose with spearmint, cloves and blackberries. Floral, too. Full body with phenomenal detail featuring delicate but intense blackberry, espresso, toasted oak, caramel and dark chocolate. Cedar and sweet tobacco. Finesse all over. The wine of the vintage? Everything is there. Great energy. ~99 James Suckling

I loved the 2011 Screaming Eagle when it was in barrel and then as a young, recently-bottled wine. It is every bit compelling today. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, sage, mint and white pepper lend notable energy throughout. At age ten, the 2011 positively bristles with energy and freshness. Winemaker Nick Gislason waited until the end of October to harvest. Among other things, the 2011 is unique for its high percentage of Cabernet Franc (12%). Today, the 2011 is spectacularly beautiful. Readers who own it should be thrilled. ~ 98 Vinous Media

This is very rich and much more youthful compared to the 1998. Very fruity, offering plum and cherry notes on a powerful, concentrated profile. Still tastes like primary fruit, with a sweet midpalate and excellent finish. ~96 Wine Spectator

Made from a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon is a sexy, upfront, precociously styled wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color as well as lots of licorice, camphor, black currant jam, new oak and spice box characteristics. Dense, rich and impressive, the early drinking charm of the 2011 vintage gives it immediate appeal. ~94 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle is Napa Valley’s ultimate cult winery, a tiny Oakville estate whose microscopic production and sky-high quality have made it one of the most coveted wines on earth.

Founded by Jean Phillips and elevated by legendary winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett—whose touch also helped define Dalla Valle Maya and Grace Family—the estate became synonymous with precision, purity, and luxury Cabernet.

With gravelly, perfectly drained Oakville soils and obsessive vineyard selection, Screaming Eagle produces only a few hundred cases each year, crafting wines of extraordinary depth, aromatic intensity, and long-term aging potential.
