About the Wine
Marco Speri is the fifth generation of one of the most important winemaking families in Valpolicella. His father, Benedetto, perfected some of the first Amarones. Marco followed in his father’s footsteps at Speri winery for about 25 years. In 2008, Marco created his own brand, Secondo Marco, to make wines according to his own vision. Marco’s goal is to make elegant, food-friendly wines by focusing on higher acidity, lower alcohol, and less residual sugar. By emphasizing his concept of “drinkability,” or creating softer wines that are not harsh and high in alcohol, the end result is a very personal interpretation of the Valpolicella region. Try this gastronomic wonder, it's ready to dance across your palate and transport you to a culinary paradise.
This Amarone is produced from hand-harvested grape bunches selected for perfect maturation. After 100 days of drying indoors and with a weight loss of 50%, the wine receives a prolonged pre- and post-fermentation maceration using only indigenous yeasts.
Aging: 42 Months in Slavonian Oak
Tasting notes
Aromas and flavors of dried Morello cherries and warm baking spices are followed by a ripe but refreshing palate. Infused with the strength and soul of its native land, its nature tamed and matured to develop such elegant energy. Finally free to express its notes with a refined intensity, it will offer a truly unique experience.
Critical Reviews
Round and ripe with seasoned oak notes; juicy and balanced, and brimming over with hedgerow fruits. Exceptionally clean and precise; notes of aniseed and tobacco to finish. Really stylish and with low residual sugar. ~92 Decanter
Marco Speri worked at Speri, his family’s winery in Valpolicella, for 25 years before striking out on his own in 2008. His 37 vineyard acres are located near the town of Fumane, and the vines that produce his Amarone were planted in 1995. He favors long fermentations in cement with ambient yeasts, and aged this wine for 42 months in large Slavonian botti. Lovely and red-fruited, with subtle notes of dried herbs and spices, it’s an Amarone for the dinner table. ~90 Wine & Spirits
