About The Wine

"Palmer is a well-known Chateau, One of the greatest in Bordeaux. Once it touches your lips, Your lips will write quips, And you’ll want to go to Margaux!"

Chateau Palmer whose pedigree architecture is a hallmark of its superb produce is an undisputed star of the prestigious Margaux Appellation.
The unusual combination of grape varieties – as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a significant amount of Petit Verdot – gives Chateau Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity.

Located in the Margaux appellation of the Medoc, Bordeaux area, Chateau Palmer is a classified third growth (one of fourteen) of the 1855 classification. Its vineyard lies upon the famous gravel rises of the greatest of Medoc wines, this first terrace of gravels formed by and along the Gironde estuary. On this exceptional terroir, Chateau Palmer has constantly produced wines of unique character, clearly identified and recognized by fine wine lovers all over the world.

Chateau Palmer is one of the most coveted wines not just among the third growths but among all of the classified growths. It is located down the street from Chateau Margaux. Palmer started as part of Chateau d’Issan, it was then split off into the current estate as Chateau de Gasc. It wasn’t until Charles Palmer purchased the estate in the early 1800s that it received its current moniker. The house has since changed hands many times over its history and is currently owned by between 22 shareholders. Through the many different owners, one thing has been consistent, the wine delivers even in down vintages

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is mind-blowing with complex and superb aromas of dried flowers, blackcurrants and raspberries. Full-bodied, yet polished and velvety with lots of tension and intensity. Layers of fruit and character. Finishes with pure fruit, hazelnuts and minerals. ~97 James Suckling

The annual release of 10 year old Château Palmer, and this time it's an often-underrated but delicious vintage that sits in the shadow of the most prestigious years of the last decade. Proof of how slowly this wine ages, it is packed with blueberry and cassis fruits, a shot of mint leaf, mandarin peel, sage and dark chocolate, with shoulders and a serious architecture, bigger than you might expect for a vintage with such an easy-drinking, gourmet reputation. I last tasted this vintage around eight months ago and it has opened up further since then, often the case as wines shift around the decade mark, and this is an upscore. A moment when Palmer was fully committing to farming biodynamically, doubling its coverage to almost 15 hectares, and had just unveiled a new cellar. Harvest October 1 to 15, Sabrina Pernet technical director, Thomas Duroux director. 68% new oak. No rush to drink, and has many decades ahead, but you can begin thinking about it. ~95 Jane Anson

The 2012 Palmer showed beautifully, with the elegance and purity this cuvée is known for front and center. Offering lots of crème de cassis, licorice, smoked earth and a hint of spring flowers, it has medium to full-bodied richness, a balanced, graceful texture, plenty of tannin, and a great finish. This is one of those wines that grows on you with time in the glass and is going to evolve gracefully on its purity and balance. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2012 Palmer is already offering demonstrative drinking at age 10, bursting with aromas of cherries, blackberries, violets and spices, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it's fleshy and sensual, with a deep and layered core of fruit that's discreetly underpinned by succulent acids and sweet, powdery tannins. Concentrated, broad and persistent, this is one of the most successful wines of the vintage, as well as one of the most dramatic. Thomas Duroux is crafting more integrated, less overtly oaky wines at Palmer today, but this 2012 is nonetheless a terrific effort. (WK) ~95 Wine Advocate

A blend of 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2012 Palmer is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It explodes from the glass with a provocative perfume of stewed black plums, boysenberry preserves, and licorice, with suggestions of Chinese five spice, dried roses, and sandalwood. The medium-bodied palate is coated with black fruit preserves and exotic spice layers, supported by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length. (LPB) ~95 Wine Independent
