About the Wine
Founded by Mark Tarlov (Evening Land) and originating in Burgundy, Maison L’Envoyé crafts this region’s wine trinity: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay Noir. Yet from this tenor of focus and commitment, a global fellowship emerged, with terroir-driven Pinot Noir as the linchpin. Driven by the elusive hunt for the world’s finest Pinot Noir sites, Maison L’Envoyé traverses the globe, presenting the many veils of regionality and winemaking style. With winemaking footprints in Burgundy, Willamette Valley, Central Otago, and Tasmania, Maison L’Envoyé champions many unsung growers who have farmed their vineyards for decades and generations, some mere feet away from more illustriously cited neighbors. Maison L’Envoyé has been a standout since launching in 2011 including Wine & Spirits naming it a ‘Winery To Watch’ in 2015.
Burgundy’s ‘golden slope’ is a south-east facing escarpment with an essential aspect in this continental climate, while Jurassic limestone provides unmatched minerality. Grand Cru Pinot Noirs of silken form hail from the northern Côte de Nuits, while the southern arc, the Côte de Beaune, boasts elegant Pinot Noirs alongside revered Grand Cru Chardonnays.
The grapes were hand-picked in mid-September. Indigenous yeast fermentation in stainless steel with gentle cap management to extract color and flavor without excessive phenolics. Matured in neutral French oak for 12 months to meld flavors and preserve fresh aromatics without imparting dominant oak. This wine includes a component of 1er Cru Savigny “les Marconnets.”
Aging: 12 Months in French Oak
Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Pinot Noir. The 2012 Bourgogne Rouge is sourced from three growers situated around Beaune and the Hautes Cote plus a component of 1’er Cru Savigny ‘Les Marconnets’. Raspberry aromas hints of clove and classic floral perfumes lead, followed by crunchy red fruits, silky grape tannins, and a nervy, acid backbone. Begs for charcuterie
Reviews
I have always been a fan of Bourgogne Rouge—often some of Burgundy's greatest values. The 2012 Maison L'Envoyé delivers fresh, red fruit flavors, with a touch of savory herbs; medium-bodied and zesty the finish, this wine looks like an excellent match lightly grilled salmon. ~90 Wilfred Wong
