About the Wine

Barolo, often called the “King of Wines,” is known for its incredible aging potential, and this bottle is no exception. With over a decade of cellar-aging under its belt, this wine has reached the perfect point in its life. The tannins have softened, the flavors have deepened, and the complexity is at its peak.

This wine comes from one of the most revered regions in the wine world: the Piedmont, specifically from La Morra and Bussia in Monforte d'Alba, an area so remarkable that UNESCO has recognized it as "an exceptional living testimony to the historical tradition of grape growing and winemaking processes." Within this region lies La Bussia, the birthplace of the 2012 Stroppiana Gabutti Bussia Barolo—a wine that reflects the incredible terroir of this prestigious zone.

Let’s set the scene: a small but mighty winery that dates back to the 1960s. Family-run, hands-on, and fiercely dedicated to crafting world-class Barolo, the Stroppiana family runs a tight ship—growing and hand-harvesting the grapes themselves on just 13 1/2 acres. Yes, small production. Big impact.

But the story goes back much further. Picture this: Great-grandparents Giuseppe and Oreste, hailing from two different corners of the world—one from Liguria, the other from the Langhe hills. Together, they cultivated the land, growing grapes and hazelnuts, making just enough wine for family use. Over time, that little hobby turned into a true family enterprise, with Dario—the father, and now the driving force behind the estate—learning the ropes from his grandparents, polishing his craft at the School of Oenology in Alba, and taking the family legacy to new heights.

And it doesn’t stop there. Dario and Stefania’s children, who grew up among the vines, are now taking the reins in the family business. They’ve infused their own energy into the estate, and in 2017, they officially took over, continuing the work that began generations ago.

This 2012 Barolo isn’t just a wine; it’s a piece of history, made from one of the most celebrated vineyards in Barolo, the Gabutti Bussia. The wine tells the story of this land—of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to creating something exceptional.

With only a limited number of bottles available, this is a true collector’s gem—an invitation to experience a piece of Barolo’s history and the passion of a family who has devoted their lives to this craft.

2012 was a great vintage for Piedmont. Wine Spectator blessed this year with a 94pt review and said: "Barolos are elegant, balanced and expressive, with fruit and savory elements."

Aging: Slavonian oak barrels for 2 years.

Tasting Notes

100% 100% Nebbiolo. This Nebbiolo, often compared to a precious garnet stone, exhibits a velvety texture, high tannins, powerful notes of cherry, plum, and violet with sweet spices of tobacco and cocoa, and aging notes of white truffle. This is the perfect Nebbiolo to pair with fresh game, red meat, and mature cheeses.

Critical Reviews

Wow. This offers up real complexity on the nose with tea leaves, charcuterie, leather, charcoal, wood fire, charcoal, dried white roses, mahogany and cloves. Chewy and layered with so much spice box character and fine acidity. A long, charcoal-laden finish. ~95 James Suckling
